A Lesson in Life

By Tammy

She sat there reading the letter for the hundredth time as tears fell down her face.  Her life had changed with this letter and now she was unsure where to go.  The words had touched her life over and over again for the past several years and no matter where her life took her they followed her.  Today the paper was worn thin but whenever she felt lonely or scared about where life was taking her she would open up the pages and read it again.

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, they serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who want to become.  You never know who these people may be; your roommate, neighbor, professor, long lost friends, lover, or even a complete stranger who, when you lock eyes with them, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.

Thinking back she remembered that was exactly what happened, their eyes had locked and both had been lost in love forever.  Neither had ever planned on falling in love, but instead they had found each other and were now planning a future together.  Sure there had been troubles what relationship didn’t have them, but everyone had been taken separately and they had worked through them ultimately making them stronger.

And sometimes things happen to you and at the time they may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming these obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, will power or heart.

So many things had gone wrong over the past eight years.   The relationship had been tried more than once and several times they came very close to losing one another.  But each time they had grown closer and found that their love would make it through anything.  Each struggle, every obstacle made their bond tighter and tighter until they knew that they could never be apart.

Everything happens for a reason.  Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck.  Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul.  Without these small tests, if they be events, illnesses or relationships, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere.  Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

The past couple weeks had been tough for the both of them.  Work had kept them busier than ever before.  She had been in court with a murder trial and he had been working undercover near the Mexican border.  But tonight he was coming home and she was anxious to see him.  Closing her eyes for a minute she could see his face and feel the taste of his kiss.  She longed to feel his arms wrapped around her as she buried her head in his shoulder.

Glancing at her watch she knew he would be there soon.  Gently she wiped the tears that had fallen from her eyes and as she stood the doorbell rang.  Taking the paper she folded it up tightly and placed it back in the drawer. Breathing in deeply she walked towards the door and after checking the peephole she opened it to find him standing there.

Both knew that one day soon they would be have to once again go through this ordeal but for the time being they were going to enjoy the special moment.  Anything could happen and they each could be gone from the others life so nothing was taken for granted each had learned their lessons in life.
