A Love For All Time
(A missing scene from “No Way Out”)

By By betcop rlcbac@sgi.net

Alex was cold.  Hours in the freezing water had taken its toll.  Walker would come, he always did.  Would he know how long she had held on?  Had he felt her love as she had slipped under the surface, his name on her trembling lips?  Could he forgive her for not holding on?

“I love you, Walker.  Please forgive me for leaving you.”  Alex drifted toward the light, feeling warm and safe.

**********

“Alex?”  The soft voice startled her as Walker slipped into the room.  He had been watching her from the doorway for some time.

“I…I’m just thinking,” she replied, her eyes meeting his for a moment, her troubled thoughts clouding the crystal blue depths.  Alex’s gaze returned to the view beyond the hospital window.

“The doctor has released you.  You’re ree to go.”  His hands rested lightly on her shoulders, feeling the slight tremors that coursed through her body.  Walker suppressed a shudder of his own.  Less than 18 hours ago, his fiancée and his partner had been fighting for their lives.

“Trivette’s been released, Alex, he’s fine.  C.D.’s rescheduled the party for tomorrow night.  I’ve taken the day off,” Alex couldn’t help but smile at this comment.  “So will you come back to the ranch with me?”

Alex sighed, stretching a bit, then smiled at Walker.  “Yes, I think I’d like that.”

Her smile was forced.  Walker observed his fiancée with concern as she gathered her few belongings.

The ride was a quiet one, both lost in their own thoughts of the previous day.  Walker pulled the truck up on the lawn, near the front porch.

“Uncle Ray would be having a fit right now,” he commented wryly, bringing a slight smile to Alex’s face.  More concerned now, Walker jumped out and crossed to her door, opening it for her before she could react.

“Alex, let’s sit awhile.  The sun’s warm this morning.”  Walker held out his hands to her and as she stepped from the RAM, he wrapped her in his arms.  Again, he felt her tremble.

“Walker, hold me,” her voice was muffled by the soft denim of his shirt.  The urge to hide, safe in his warm embrace, was almost more than Alex could bear.

He reached down, lifting her in his arms.  Kicking the passenger door shut behind them, Walker carried Alex to the porch, cradling her close to his chest.  He made them comfortable on the swing, tossing a blanket across Alex’s legs.  She lay quietly against him, not speaking, but holding on to him tightly.

Walker had a keen idea of what she was feeling now, having had time to process the events.  If the thoughts she was experiencing were even close to those he had…!

Alex had spent a restless night, sleeping fitfully as nightmares chased through her dreams.  She had been aware of Walker sitting at her side, his hand twined in hers, soothing her as she had tried to rest.

Toward dawn, Alex had slept deeply, dreaming…or was it a dream?  It had felt incredibly real.

“I love you, Walker.  Please forgive me for leaving you.”  Alex drifted toward the light, feeling warm and safe.

“Alex, don’t leave me!  Oh, God, I can’t take this again.  I love her so much!”

One two three four…breathe.  One two three four…breathe.

“She…hung on…for a long time…Walker,” Jimmy Trivette was gasping for breath, weak from his near drowning.

One two three four…breathe.  One two three four…breathe.

Come on Alex, come on!

“Oh, Alex…  I almost didn’t make it!  Can you forgive me?  I love you!”

Alex felt a pull…or maybe a …feeling? She turned her gaze upon the golden-red head of a man, cradling in his arms a beautiful woman.  Curious, she looked closer, intrigued by the love and strength portrayed by this pair.

“Walker!!  I’m here!  Oh, my love, don’t cry for me.  I’m here with you now.”  She leaned down to touch the tears that sparkled in his beard.  The warmth of the flowing tears infused her, strengthening her

“I couldn’t live without you, Alex, your love means everything to me!  You’ve changed my life, you’ve changed me…you’ve shown me that being a Ranger is only part of who I am.  Don’t ever forget that I love you!”

“My love, my heart, my soul!  I knew you would come.”

“I couldn’t lose you, not now, not ever.  I love you, Alex.”

Later, as she awoke, Alex couldn’t shake the memory of the dream.  It replayed over and over in her head, the intensity causing her to tremble with emotion.

And now, safely cradled in Walker’s arms, she had to know the answer…and only Walker could tell her what the dream/vision meant.

Alex drew a ragged breath, tense and apprehensive.  Walker brushed aside the silky curls from her face, reaching out to her in the best way he knew.

“Alex, honey?  What’s wrong?”  Walker’s lips caressed her ear, his voice soothing.

She turned in his arms, facing him, her blue eyes clouded.  Alex’s fingers traced random designs on Walker’s shirt as she struggled with her thoughts.  How can I describe something when I’m not even sure what it is??

“Walker…tell me…how you…” Alex paused, unsure how to continue her request.  She looked up at Walker, her eyes pleading for understanding.

“Tell you what?”  He prodded gently, although he had a very good idea where the conversation was headed.

Mustering her courage, Alex continued, “Tell me what happened when you found us.  Jimmy and me.  I…need to know…what you…” Alex stopped speaking, but her thoughts continued.  ‘I need to know what you felt!’

“Alex, I thought I had lost you,” Understanding her request, Cordell Walker spoke in a hushed tone, his blue-gray eyes distant and unfocused as he remembered:

**********

Walker dropped to his knees beside the still form of his fiancée, feeling frantically for a pulse at her neck.  Horrified shock swept through him upon finding none.

Alex, don’t leave me!  Oh, God, I can’t take this again.  I love her so much!

Quickly locating the proper spot, Walker began CPR.

One two three four…breathe.  One two three four…breathe.

“She…hung on…for a long time…Walker,” Jimmy Trivette was gasping for breath, weak from his near drowning.

One two three four…breathe.  One two three four…breathe.

Come on Alex, come on!

“Come on, Alex!”  Trivette’s anguished plea echoed the one in Walker’s heart.

One two three four…breathe.  One two three four…breathe.

Suddenly, Alex coughed, then choked as water filled her mouth and nostrils.  Reacting instantly, Walker turned her head, helping her clear the water she had swallowed.

Relief flooded through Walker as he gathered Alex into his arms and sank back against the wall of the tank.

“Thank God,” gasped Trivette.  He collapsed to the floor and let the blackness overtake him.

Oh, Alex…  I almost didn’t make it!  Can you forgive me?  I love you!

Cordell Walker couldn’t take his eyes from Alex.  He held her tightly to his shaking body, his mind racing, and his heart full.  The shock and horror of what Pike had nearly accomplished washed over him in waves, and he gathered her closer still.  His tears ran silently down his face, his shoulders shaking with sobs that threatened to overwhelm him.

Walker caressed her damp cheek, feeling the chill that lingered there.  Her golden curls lay across his arm as he cradled her against his chest.  Semi-conscious, Alex clung to him, her breaths shallow and tentative at first, but gaining strength by the moment.

I couldn’t live without you, Alex, your love means everything to me!  You’ve changed my life, you’ve changed me…you’ve shown me that being a Ranger is only part of who I am.  Don’t ever forget that I love you!

In the distance, the wail of sirens came closer.  They would find the RAM, and then find its owner.  Exhaustion crept up on Walker, his emotions battered by the days events.  He heaved a sigh and lifted his head slightly, gazing at his partner, lying semi-conscious nearby.

It won’t be long now my friend.  There aren’t words to say…that would express my gratitude for what you have done for me…for us.

“Trivette!  Jimmy!  Can you hear me?”  The Ranger’s voice was soft, yet urgent.

Jimmy stirred slowly, his body stiff and cold, aching from the beating he had taken from Pike’s men.

“I’m here, man.”  Jimmy rolled to his knees and attempted to gain his feet.  Failing to stand, he pulled himself to Walker’s side, leaning heavily against the tank’s wall.  Walker reached out to steady his partner, drawing him close, sharing what strength he could.

“How is she, Walker?  I…I tried to…keep her up, man.  She was thinking…reaching for you…” Jimmy’s voice broke and a shudder passed through him as he struggled for composure.  Walker’s grip tightened on Jimmy’s shoulder.

“I’m so sorry, Walker…I’m so sorry…I couldn’t get to her…” Trivette buried his head in his hands, shaking from the emotion wracking him.

“Jimmy, Jimmy?  It’s ok, I’m…still here.”  The soft voice took both men by surprise.

Walker ‘s arms drew her closer, his loving gaze reaching through to her heart, his soul at peace.  She searched his face, finding no trace of the torment he had recently bore, finding only love there.

My love, my heart, my soul!  I knew you would come.

The intensity of her unspoken words shook Walker to the core.

I couldn’t lose you, not now, not ever.  I love you, Alex.

The crystal blue eyes sought out Jimmy next, full of love and gratitude.  He met her gaze squarely, relieved she was back.

“Jimmy…thank you…without you…” Alex paused, gathering her strength, “I could…never have made it…alone.”

Trivette scrubbed his hand across his face, his eyes burning with unshed tears.

“She never gave up on you, man,” Trivette whispered.  Walker’s hand squeezed Jimmy’s arm gently, and he knew it was all right.

The brilliant blue eyes turned back to her love and Walker kissed her softly.  Alex’s arms tightened around Walker’s neck and he helped her settle comfortably across his legs.  As she cuddled in closer to his warmth, Walker offered a silent prayer of thanks for the lives that had almost been lost today.

**********

A long, shuddering sigh accompanied the end of Walker’s account.  Alex was crying softly, her head buried in his shoulder.  Both were drained by the memories, their souls laid bare by sharing thoughts that no human should ever have to think.

Alex felt relief, the dream/vision now put into perspective, but the mystery of how and why it had been dreamt would remain.  Still, she would always carry the beauty of the knowledge that love can transcend all, even death.

Walker, knowing now why his love had made her request, was also relieved, and in awe of the healing power of love.  His arms tightened protectively around Alex, his bearded cheek against her satin-soft skin.

She sighed contentedly, then, pulling back, sought his lips with hers.

“You can’t get rid of me that easily, cowboy!”  Startled, Walker stared at her, blinking in confusion.

The impish sound of Alex’s giggle was joined by Walker’s rich laugh, as they embraced, secure in the love that was uniquely theirs, for all time.
