Parking the Ram in its usual spot he climbed out and headed for his office; it seemed to him that he was stopped every few feet by people either asking about Alex and Angela and/or welcoming him back to work. He breathed a sigh of relief when he finally made it to the office only to immediately sigh in resignation when he opened the door and was met by a huge Welcome Back banner and the excited shouts from his co-workers.

Holding up his hand for silence he pointed at the decorations saying, “Those have to go, this is a place of business not a party venue.”

Gage just laughed as he said, “Good to have you back boss.”

Walker looked at his partner’s empty desk asking, “I thought Trivette was back already.”

Speaking up Sydney said, “He is, he had an appointment with the doctor this morning, he should be here before much longer.”

He spent the next hour getting up to speed on everything he had missed and after grabbing a cup of coffee he began going through the papers on his desk.

A little while later Jimmy came in and placed a wrapped box on his partner’s desk saying, “Sorry I missed the official party this morning.”

Picking up the package Walker asked, “What’s this?”

“There’s only one way to find out.”

He turned the box over in his hands a couple of times before his curiosity got the best of him and after tearing the paper off he opened the lid. Reverently he removed the framed picture of Alex, Angela and himself and looking up he asked, “When did you take this?”

Syd and Gage heard the deep emotion in his voice and looked at each other in curiosity; normally Walker was very careful to keep his emotions under tight control.

Jimmy placed a hand on his partner’s shoulder as he replied, “Actually it was Erica that took the picture not long after Angela was born; when I saw it I knew I had to have it enlarged and framed for you; anyone seeing the picture will definitely know how much you and Alex love that little girl.”

Gage and Sydney came over to look and she spoke up, “Wow, he’s right, that is one fantastic picture.”

Even though he had heard the emotion in Walker’s voice, he was totally unprepared when he saw the look on his friend’s face; Jimmy said, “I actually had three of these made, one for your office, one for Alex’s office and one you can take home.”

“Thanks Trivette.” He placed the photograph on the corner of his desk and started again to sort the papers on his desk only to find his eyes drawn again and again to the photo; he didn’t even remember when exactly it was taken but the look on his face was one of total awe and…love.

Everyone looked up when the door opened and seeing the Captain enter they were all immediately on their feet as he said, “I need all of you in my office in fifteen minutes, don’t be late.” He walked back out and the four exchanged pointed glances; it was rare for them to all be summoned at once.

They were all in his office a few minutes later when the door opened and a DEA agent they were all familiar with walked in. “Good, the gang is all here. I’ll get straight to the point; we have a reliable informant who reported a major drug deal going down in the next few days; unfortunately he has since dropped off the radar and our other contacts are all too scared to talk. We’re requesting the help of the Texas Rangers to verify this deal, to find out when it’s taking place and to assist in capturing all the parties involved.”

“What was the informant’s name?”

“Henry Jenks.”

Gage spoke up saying, “I’ve dealt with him before, I know where he normally hangs out and who some of his friends are.”

Walker said, “Okay, give Trivette as many of the names as you know so he can start running them through the computer; you, Syd and I will start trying to locate Jenks or some of his friends who might know something.” Realizing what he was doing he suddenly stopped and said, “Sorry Captain, it’s force of habit, obviously we’ll do whatever you say.”

With an amused smile he replied, “Your ideas sound just fine Walker; I have a feeling that one of these days you’re going to be on this side of the desk.”

“Don’t hold your breath Captain; I like my desk just fine.”

That night when he got home Walker immediately gave the other two pictures to Alex and she reacted just as he had, tearfully she said, “What an amazing picture; the look on your face…it’s so clear how much you love her.”

“She’s definitely my little Angel.”

“Oh really, and what am I?”

Wrapping his arms around her he shocked her with his answer, “That’s easy, you’re my life, I love you.”

Kissing him soundly she said, “I love you too.”

The next few days were busy as he spent hours chasing down every lead they found and finally they got the break they needed; a meeting was arranged with DEA, DPD and the Rangers where plans were finalized for the bust.

February 26, 2001

Walker went home that night and Alex met him at the door for their customary welcome home kiss; then he changed clothes and headed for the barn to take care of the horses.

She watched him go and smiled as she thought about how different the greeting would be tomorrow night; she had her six week follow up with Dr. Bates the next day and expected to be given the all clear; she was determined to make it a night that neither of them would forget.

Once he had the barn in order he went in to take a shower and came out with nothing but a towel wrapped around him; he stopped in his tracks when he realized he was not alone and seeing the look in his wife’s eyes he huskily said, “Only one more day honey, we can make it.”

Going to him she ran her hands down his chest and stopped at the knot he’d tied in the towel, “Darling, I…”

Taking her hands in his he raised them to his lips and kissed them both before saying, “I’m not taking any chances, but once you get the all clear…” he took her lips in a kiss that left them both wanting more and muttered, “See what you did lady; now I have to take another shower…a cold one.”

After dinner they took Angela outside and the three of them sat on the porch swing together for a while with the baby held against his chest with one arm and Alex pulled tightly against his side with the other.

“I wish you could be with me at my appointment tomorrow; I guess I’ll just have to get something in writing from her giving me permission to seduce my husband.”

“Alex!”

She laughed as she answered, “You know I wouldn’t do that.”

“I wish I could be there too, but as usual the criminals aren’t cooperating.”

“I know you’ll be long gone before I get up in the morning so promise me now.”

Knowing exactly what she meant he replied, “I’ll be careful.”

A little while later they made their way back inside and worked together to get Angela ready for bed; as they got ready themselves he said, “I may not have a chance tomorrow to call, so I hope all goes well.”

“Me too.”

“I love you.”

“And I love you.”

Laughing he asked, “Are you ready to start planning the next one?”

“Walker!”

February 27, 2001

Elation had turned to devastation in the blink of an eye and as she exited Dr. Bates office it was all she could do to hold it together. One minute on top of the world at the okay to resume physical relations with her husband as it had been six weeks since Angela was delivered; then the news that had torn her world apart, because of her age (36) and the complications from her daughter’s birth…her chances of having another child were extremely slim. How was she going to tell her husband; how would he react to the fact she was no longer whole? Especially considering he had mentioned just last night the desire to have another child; what was she going to do?

Glancing over at his partner he couldn’t help noticing the “look” and for once he didn’t have to guess what was going on; he could count and it had been six weeks. “Has Alex called yet?”

With a resigned sigh the older man shook his head saying, “Not yet, I was hoping to hear from her before we left, but looks like I’ll have to wait until tonight to find out what the doctor said.”

Alex double checked to make sure she had everything she needed, and then left the note where he would find it and headed for the airport with their daughter. She took one last look around the house she loved so much and walked out the door whispering, “Good bye Walker.”

Inside the drug lab the scene was chaotic; the four rangers with backup from DPD and DEA were in a huge battle with the occupants. The four friends got separated as feet, hands and bullets were flying all over the place until finally the last of the bad guys surrendered.

Trivette yelled out, “Walker, Sid, Gage, you guys okay?” He got affirmative answers from the two younger rangers and called again, “Walker?” When he still did not receive an answer he yelled “Sid, Gage, split up; we have to find him.”

A few seconds later he heard Gage yell, “Over here, he’s breathing but he’s losing a lot of blood.”

Running over Jimmy took one look and stripped off his shirt to press it against the chest wound, glancing up he said, “Gage, use your shirt to try to stop the bleeding from the head wound.” Seeing Sydney approaching he said, “Call it in and get us some help.”

One of the DPD officers came up asking, “Anything I can do?”

Reaching into Walker’s pocket he pulled out the keys to the Ram and said, “There’s a red bag behind the passenger seat, grab me a shirt; Gage do you have a spare shirt in your car?”

Tossing the man his keys he said, “My bag is in the trunk.”

When the officer returned the two took turns donning the clean shirts while they all tag-teamed their downed friend to make sure they kept pressure on his injuries.

The EMT’s arrived on scene and Sydney directed them to Walker, they took over his care so Jimmy looked up saying, “I’m going to the hospital as soon as they transport; you two find Alex and get her over there.”

“You got it!”

A couple of minutes later they reported that she wasn’t answering her cell phone or home phone.

“She may have forgotten to turn it back on after her appointment; Gage, try the office of Dr. Bates…Syd head out to the ranch.”

“What should we tell her when we find her?”

One of the EMT’s looked up saying, “Tell her to pray.”

The three friends looked at each other in dismay as they heard the tone of his voice; it was Gage who managed to ask, “What are you saying?”

“He’s lost a lot of blood, no exit wound for the bullet, possible fractured skull; I’m saying it doesn’t look good Ranger.”

Sydney and Gage both saw the look of devastation on Trivette’s face and she said, “He’s beat the odds before; he’ll do it again; let’s go Gage.”

Jimmy was sitting in the ICU waiting room when Sydney came in a little while later with an envelope that had Walker’s name on it; he noticed it was still sealed but a little thing like that at a time like this wasn’t going to stop him. He opened it and read the note within, then read it again before he crumpled it up in his fist.

“What does it say? Any clue where we can find Alex and Angela?”

“No.”

“Okay then, Gage and I will keep trying to find them.”

“No, I need you and Gage to work the drug bust; keep me posted; I’ll be here.”

Giving him a hug she asked, “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah, fine.” After she left he read the note again and silently asked, “Where are you Alex? What the Hell happened?”

Once Sidney got back to her car she called Erica and filled her in on what had happened before saying, “He needs you; he’s all alone over there.”

Erica found him a few minutes later and wanted to cry at the look of anguish on his face, she knew how close the two men were and without hesitating she went to him, wrapped her arms around him and just held him close.

Melting into her embrace he said, “You’d think after all these years I’d be used to this…but it’s so much harder this time, in the past it’s always been three of us waiting on word of the other, but now…CD’s dead, I don’t have a clue where Alex is, all I know is that my partner…my best friend…is in there fighting for his life and I’m…I’m lost.”

“What do you mean you don’t know where Alex is?”

“She left Walker a note…baby you know I love you but please don’t ask me questions about it okay?”

Nodding her head she replied, “I love you too…Oh Jimmy; I’m so sorry, I know how difficult this must be for you, let me help.”

“You are helping me, just by being here; I don’t think I could have handled it on my own.”

She tugged him over to the seats and got him to sit down while they waited for word.

When the doctor finally approached a while later he recognized Jimmy and asked, “Ranger Trivette, will Mrs. Walker be here soon?”

“She’s out of town and we haven’t been able to reach her; how is he?” Noticing the doctor seemed to be struggling with what to say he quietly asked, “What are his chances?”

Placing his hand on the younger man’s shoulders he said, “I wish I could give you better news, but it will be a miracle if he makes it through the night; the bullet wound is bad enough but the head injury is what has us the most concerned; they are operating right now to ease the pressure on his brain.”

Dropping to his knees Jimmy tried to block out what he had just been told; this couldn’t be happening!

March 1, 2001

Alex finished feeding Angela and tried to get her settled down; they had been in New York for two days and her daughter definitely was not happy, truth be told…neither was she. There had been a time when she enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the city but now she missed the quiet and the solitude of the ranch, mostly she missed her Cowboy but she was determined to stay strong.

Gordon looked up from the newspaper he was reading when his daughter came into the living room and had no trouble telling how unhappy she was; his attempts at getting her to tell him what was wrong had so far been unsuccessful but he wasn’t going to give up. “Honey, you know I love having you and Angela here, but it’s obvious that something is wrong, I want to help you but until you tell me what’s wrong…I can’t.”

She looked into his face and seeing the love and concern there she broke down and as he stood up with his arms open she ran to him and let him hold her as she choked out, “You can’t help me, nobody can.” Seeing the determined look in his eyes she finally told him what the doctor had said, how it made her feel and what she put in the note she had left for Walker. “Please stay out of this Dad.”

Two more days passed before Gordon had taken all he could and despite the promise he had made to his daughter he tried to get in touch with his son-in-law. When none of those numbers were answered he frowned in puzzlement then looked up the next person who might have a clue as to what was going on.

“Yeah, Trivette.”

“James, it’s Gordon Cahill, I’m trying to reach Walker; do you know where he is?

Mr.Cahill, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Walker’s in ICU here at St Mathews, he was critically injured four days ago.”

Sinking down into his chair Gordon replied, “He’s in ICU? How bad is it?”

“Before I answer that…do you know where Alex is?”

“”Here with me in New York, but…”

“Tell her I got the note she left for Walker and there’s a very good chance divorce won’t be necessary.” Hanging up the phone it was all he could do not to throw it across the room.

Going into the living room where his daughter and granddaughter were he said, “Now I know why Walker hasn’t bothered to respond to your note.”

“He’s glad to be free of me Dad; what other explanation is there?”

“Honey he never got your note; I just talked to Jimmy; Walker’s been in ICU for four days.”

Leaping to her feet she said, “What? Dad, I’ve got to get back to Dallas.”

Hoping he was doing the right thing he responded, “Why? From what Trivette said there’s a very good chance Walker is not going to make it. That’s much cheaper and easier than a divorce.” The crack of her hand across his face actually made him smile as he said, “Okay now that question has been answered, you still love him; so you don’t think he loves you.”

“What are you talking about? Of course I know he loves me.”

“Do you really honey? Because you running out on him without giving him a chance says otherwise.”

Sinking back onto the sofa she dropped her head in her hands saying, “Oh Dad, I have made such a mess of things.”

“Yes you have; now get your things packed and I will get a plane chartered so you can get back where you belong as quickly as possible.”

March 4, 2001

Once they landed in Dallas the next morning he said, “I made a few calls, the person overseeing his care is Dr. Richards, he told me that Walker is still extremely critical and he’ll give you more details when you arrive, just have him paged when you get to the hospital. I’ve arranged to have a car waiting for you and if you’ll give me your keys I can take your car to get Angela home.”

Hugging him she said, “Thanks Daddy and I’m sorry for slapping you earlier.”

Laughing he replied, “Well somebody had to make you see sense!”

As she was on her way to the hospital she heard a song and listened to the words.

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for one more day with you!

One more day, one more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again, I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you
One more day

First thing I'd do is pray for time to crawl
I'd unplug the telephone and keep the t.v off
I'd hold you every second
Say a million I love you's
That's what I'd do with one more day with you

One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you

One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you.

The tears slid down her face as she whispered, “Please hold on Walker; I love you so much; don’t you dare give up on me.”
