Blaze of Glory

Walker kissed Alex good night at her front door before heading home for the night.

“Are you sure you have to go?”

“Yeah I do. The horses are still out and I need to get them to the barn.”

“Oh well I guess you better get going then.”  Walker gave Alex one last kiss and then went out the door.

“See you in the morning for breakfast.”

“Yes you will.”

“Walker drive careful.”

"I will. I love you!”  Walker got in his truck and headed home when he saw a house on fire.  He pulled up and radioed for help.  Walker got out of his truck and went to the door, banging on it.

“Hello is anyone in there?  Walker kicked in the front door.  The first bedroom he checked he found a lady sleeping.

“Lady wake up," Walker yelled.  "The house is on fire get up.”

“Oh my God.  Who are you?"

“Walker, Texas Ranger.”  Walker helped her to the front door when she yelled.

“My baby, he is still inside.”

"Where is he?”

"In the room next to mine.”

“You stay here I will find him.”

“His name is Kenny.”

The house was in a full blaze. You could see the flames shooting up through the roof.  It was filling with smoke, and the flames were everywhere. Walker knew he didn’t have too much time.  The fire was spreading fast.  Walker rushed to the boy’s room and ran inside.  “Kenny wake up.”  Walker yelled as he picked the boy up.  Walker was heading to the front door.  The smoke was so thick he couldn’t see where he was going.  Finally a few feet in front of him he could see the front door.  All of a sudden Walker heard a cracking noise.  He looked up and saw the roof was beginning to cave in.  He covered Kenny with his body as the roof came down on top of them.  Walker put Kenny down at the last second and pushed him out of the way.  Everything came down trapping Walker.  “Kenny are you hurt?”

“No I’m okay.”

"Kenny listen to me.  Do you see the front door just behind you?"

“Yes I see it.”

“I want you to go out the door your mom is wanting out there for you.”

“What about you?”

“Tell them that I am trapped and they will get help.  Now go! Hurry!!”

Kenny went out the door and his mother grabbed him up in her arms.  “Kenny are you okay?"

“Yes but that man is hurt. The roof fell in on him."  They could hear the fire department coming.  There was a big crowd of people gathering outside.

Inside the house Walker was trying his best to get free but it was no use.  He could barely breathe.  He could feel the wood from the burning roof on his legs.  Trivette had heard Walker's call for help and headed to the address he gave out.

Finally the fire department pulled up.

“There is a man trapped in side the woman yelled.  Trivette pulled up a minute later.  He got out and saw Walkers truck. Trivette looked around and didn’t see Walker anywhere.  “Where is the guy that was driving the truck?”  Trivette asked one of the firefighters.

“I don’t know, but we were told there is a man trapped inside the house.”

“That’s my partner.”  Trivette ran to the house and was going to go inside to find Walker but the firefighters stopped him.

“What do you think you are doing Ranger?  You can’t go in there.”

“My partner is in there.”

“We will get him out that’s our job.”

Due to lack of oxygen Walker passed out.  Time was running out for him.  They started putting out the fire.  Two of the firefighters went in the front door to try and find Walker.  “There he is.”  The men started removing the debris that had Walker trapped.

“We better hurry we don’t have much time.”  A couple of other firefighters came in to fight back the flames, while the others tried to free Walker.

“He’s not breathing.”  One of the paramedics gave Walker mouth to mouth to keep Walker alive until they could get him free.  Finally after several minutes he was free.

“Come on let’s get him out of here.”   Get some oxygen over here quick.”

Trivette rushed over to Walker as soon as he saw them bring him out.  “Oh my God!  How bad is it?”

“We don’t know yet. He's not breathing.”  They gave Walker oxygen while treating the burns on his legs and lower half of his body.  Everyone waited to see if Walker was going to start to breathe on his own.

“He’s still not breathing.  Let’s get him to the hospital."  They worked on Walker all the way to the hospital but still nothing.  Trivette rode in the ambulance with Walker.

“Come on Walker breathe dame you, don’t you die on me.  Do something damn it.  Make him breathe.”

“Ranger I know you are upset but he is getting the best of care."

Just before they got to the hospital Walker started to breathe on his own.  “Okay we have him back, he’s breathing.”

“Oh thank you Lord.” Trivette said.  They finally got to the hospital and rushed Walker into the emergency room.

“Sorry Ranger you will have to wait outside.

While Trivette was waiting for news on Walker, he used his cell phone and called Alex.  “Alex this is Jimmy. I’m down at the hospital. You better get down here right away.”

“Jimmy what’s wrong?  What happened?”

“I will explain when you get here.”

“I’ll be right there.”

Alex rushed to the hospital and found Trivette in the waiting room.  “Jimmy what’s going on?”

"There was this house fire. Walker was trapped when the roof fell in.  He got the boy and his mother out but he was caught by debris.”

"How is he?”

“Bad Alex. He wasn’t breathing until just before they got to the hospital. That has been an hour and there is still no news.

Finally the doctor came out.

“Is he okay doctor?”

"He will be okay.  We need to keep him on oxygen for a few days. He is still having trouble breathing.  He took in a lot of smoke.”

“What about he burns?”

“We won’t know for awhile yet.”  We will be transferring him to the burn unit in a few minutes. He also broke his left arm but it will heal okay.”

“Can we see him?”

“No, not right now I’m afraid. We need to get him to the burn unit and start treatment right away. You can see him in the morning.  Why don’t you go home and get some rest and come back in the morning?"

"Thank you doctor."

“Jimmy what the hell is going on?”

“Hey big dog am I glad to see you.”

“What’s going on?”

“Walker has been hurt.”

“How Jimmy?”

“In a fire big dog."  Trivette went on to explain everything to CD.

“C.D. I am not leaving him here all alone.” Alex explained.

“Honey you can’t do anything for him tonight and you can’t even see him.  Please go home and get some rest he would want you too.”

“C.D. I don't know if I can do that.”

“He's right Alex.  Please listen.”

“I guess you’re right but I know I won’t sleep.”

The three friends went home and returned early the next morning.  They all three gathered outside of Walkers room.

“Alex honey are you okay?”

“I’m okay C.D.”  Alex took a deep breath before going in.  She nearly lost it, as she saw Walker in the distance.  “Oh my god Jimmy I don’t know if I can hold it together.”

“Alex you need to be strong for Walker's sake. He needs us right now.”  Just then the doctor walked up behind them.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning doctor.  How is he this morning?”

“He is in a lot of pain right now, so he is heavily sedated.  He is going to need you to help him through this.  Go ahead in and see him.”

Alex took another deep breath before going over to Walker. “Hey there Cowboy.”  Alex said as she gave him a kiss out the cheek.

“Yes it’s me.  How are you feeling?”

“I never felt better.”

“Yeah right.”

“I really did it this time.”

“Yes you did, you saved a boy and his mother.  You are a hero.”

“The boy? Did he get out okay?”

“Yes he did thanks to you.”

“That’s good, thank God.”

“Everything will work out Walker, you’ll see.”  Walker squeezed Alex’s hand trying to bare the pain.  Trivette and C.D. came in after a few minutes.

“Hey their Cordell.”

“Hello C.D., Trivette.”

“We tried to see you last night Cordell but they wouldn’t let us.”

“That’s okay I wasn’t up to company any way.”  Walker drifted off to sleep again.

“He is asleep again Jimmy.”

“Good, right now that’s the best thing for him.”

“He looks bad.  How is he ever going to get through this one?”

“This is Cordell you are talking about honey he will get through it just wait and see.”

Several weeks went by and treating Walkers burns was slow and painful.  Alex did everything she could to keep Walkers spirits up and to give him hope, but it was one of the hardest things she ever had to do.

“Hey Cowboy, cheer up everything is going to be okay. You’ll see.”

“How can you say that?  Look at the burns. They're hideous.”

“Walker I just know it is that’s all.”

“That’s a smart lady you have there I would listen to her if I were you.”  Trivette said as he walked into the room.

“Hi Jimmy.”

“Hey Alex.”

"I just want to go home.  I have had enough of this place.” Walker complained

“When did the doctor say you could go home?”

“He said in a few days.”

“That’s great Walker.  I will be there to help you.”

"Alex I don’t want everyone fussing over me.”

“We aren’t fussing.  We are just helping out. I will help with the horses.”

“Trivette did you hear what I said?”

“Walker that’s it. End of discussion.”

“I would listen if I were you Washo.  They know what is best.”

“White Eagle.”

"Hello my friend. The spirits have told me to come and bring you something special.”

“What is this White Eagle?”  Walker asked.

“It is a salve I made myself with the help of the spirits. They told me of some very special herbs that will help heal your burns without scaring.  You need to put this on your burns twice a day.  Once in the morning and again at night before you go to bed.”

"Thank you White Eagle.”  They looked and White Eagle was gone.

“How does he do that?”  Trivette asked.

“Only he and the spirits know that Trivette.”

“He always knows when you are in trouble or need him. That’s amazing.” Alex said shaking her head in awe.

“Yes it is.  He is one good friend.”

“So Walker you know the doctor is not going to be happy about this.”

“Happy about what?”  The doctor asked as he walked in the door.

“Oh doctor how are you today?”  Alex asked.

“I’m fine.  What is going on with you Walker?  You three look like you are up to something.”

“It’s nothing doctor.”  Walker said.  “White Eagle brought something to put on my burns. He said that I wouldn’t scar if I use this.”

“What is it?”  The doctor asked.

“Herbs for one, only White Eagle knows what is in it.”

“Yeah that’s right you are half Indian.  Well I tell you I have seen some amazing things over the years and if there is one thing I learned it is not to mess with people like you.”

“What do you mean by that?”  Trivette questioned.

“The Chinese and the Indians, Trivette.  Their herbs.  I have seen some of the results of the herbs and I learned not to question it.”  He gave the salve back to Walker.  “Here you are. Walker do just as White Eagle instructed you to do no more and no less is that clear?”

“I will see to it doctor.”  Alex said.

“Oh and I want to see you once a week to see how it is going. I don’t want to miss out on this if it works.”

“Okay no problem. Now, when can I get out of here?”

“You can go home tomorrow.  You will need someone there for a while. You can’t walk around yet and with that broken arm it will be hard to get around it the wheelchair.  You still have three to four weeks before the cast comes off.”

"I will be with him doctor and I will be around to help with the chores.”

"That’s good I wish you a lot of luck.  I want to see you in a week.”

“Okay thanks doctor.”

The next morning Walker was all ready to get out of there before Alex even got there.

“Good morning Cowboy.”

“Good morning Alex, I’m all ready let’s go.

“Hey not so fast Walker.”  Alex said giggling.

“Are you in a big hurry?”

“Yes of course, I can’t wait to get home.”

“Yes I can see that.”

“Just as soon as the nurse gets in here we can go.”  A few minutes later the nurse came in with some written instructions for Walker.

“Okay Ranger I know how bad you want get out of here so I won’t keep you.  Here are some care instructions for you to follow and an appointment for next week.  Are you ready to go?”

“Oh yeah!”  The nurse wheeled Walker out to the car.  He got in and Alex put the wheelchair in the trunk.  They started on their way home.

“It feels so good to be out of that place.”

“I bet it does.  We will be home real soon.  Oh Walker, Trivette and a few friends built a ramp on the porch so we can get the wheelchair up there.  When you are able to walk again they can take it down.  The way they built it there will be no problem to take down and you will never know that it was there.”

"That was real nice of them.”

“Anything for you my love.  Here we are Walker, home sweet home.”  Alex got out and unloaded the wheelchair for Walker.  “Okay Cowboy in you go.”

“I feel helpless and I don’t like it one bit.”

“Oh stop it Walker.  It’s only temporary.  Besides you are at my mercy and for now you are all mine.  No work to get in the way.”  Alex said with a devilish grin.

"Oh you do, do you?”  Walker took his good arm and pulled Alex down close to him and gave her a big kiss.  "This just may work out good after all.”  Walker told Alex.

“I sure think so.” Alex pushed Walker up the ramp into the house.

“It feels so good to be home again.  Thanks Alex.”

“You’re welcome Cowboy.”  Alex fixed Walker a wonderful dinner that night and they ate by candlelight.

“Alex this is wonderful.”

“Thank you.  I’m glad you like it.”

After dinner Walker and Alex went to sit on the porch.  “I just want to sit here and look out over the ranch and relax with my favorite lady.”

“Sounds great to me.”  Alex helped Walker from the wheelchair to the porch swing.  Cuddling up in Walker’s arms, they sat on the porch.  Alex heard Walker let out a moan.

"Walker are you okay?”

“I’m okay Alex it’s just the pain in my legs.”

"It’s time for you pain pills I will get them for you.”

“No it’s not that bad yet.”

“Walker you should take it.”

“If it gets any worse I will I promise.”

“Okay then remember you promised.”

“All I need right now Alex is you.”  Walker captured Alex’s lips in a long passionate kiss.  Alex let out a soft moan as he continued to kiss her.  They sat on the porch and looked up at stars for a long time wrapped up in each other’s arms.

“Walker we should get you inside and to bed.  It’s getting late and you have had a long day.”

“I know you’re right but I like it right where I am.”

“So do I but you need your rest."

“You’re right I am getting tired and the pain is getting worse.”

“Okay Walker let’s get you inside."

Alex got Walker inside and to the bedroom she set up down stairs for him.

"There you go, I going to go get your pain pills and then I will put the salve on your legs."  Alex came back with the pain pills and gave them to Walker.  Walker laid back on the bed so Alex could put the salve on his legs.

“I will try and be as gentle as I can.  Your legs are very sensitive and I’m afraid I will hurt you.”

“It’s okay Alex go ahead.”

Alex started rubbing the salve on his legs. She could see him trying to hide the pain.

“Walker I’m hurting you.”

“No pain no gain Alex.  Go ahead it has to be done.  Don’t worry please.”

“Okay Walker all done. How do you feel? "

“I’m okay Alex thanks.”

Alex gave Walker a kiss.

“See Alex that kiss made all the pain go away.”

“Yeah right.”

“Okay maybe not but it does make me feel better.”

“Good I’m glad to hear it.  Now go to sleep.”

"Alex please don’t go.”

“Walker this is your first day home I don’t want you to over do it.”

“Just stay here with me for a little while.”  Alex couldn’t say no to Walker so she stayed with him for awhile.

"I'll stay with you until you fall asleep. Will that be ok?"

“Alex you are an angel from heaven.”  Walker said, then he gave her a tender kiss.  They cuddled up together.  In no time at all Walker was out like a light.

“You must have been tired.”  Alex said to herself.  She gave him a goodnight kiss on the cheek then got up carefully as not to disturb him.

Alex stayed with Walker and helped him everyday, putting the salve on twice a day as White Eagle instructed. After a few weeks of putting on the salve they could see a big difference. The doctor was very pleased with his progress.  Walker and Alex waited in the examining room for the doctor to check him.

“How are you today?”  The doctor asked as he came in the room.

“Let me see how your burns are coming along.”  The doctor looked at the burns and was pleasantly surprised.

“Walker you are doing wonderful, I can’t believe how good they look.  That stuff is really working.  There is no way your burns can heel like this but they are.  Keep doing what you are doing and I want to see you in a week.   Next week we can take off the cast.”

“Okay I’ll be here.  I can’t wait to get this thing off.”

The next day Walker had some surprise visitors.  Trivette brought the boy and his mom out to the ranch to visit him.

“Ranger Walker do you remember us?”

“I’m not sure.”

"I’m not surprised.  You were too busy rescuing us.”

“Oh you are from the house fire.”

“Yes and if it were not for you we would be dead right now.  Your unselfish act nearly cost you your life.  I wanted to make sure you were feeling better before I came to see you.  My name is Amy and this is my son Kenny.”

“Mr. Walker I want to thank you for saving my mommy and me.”

Walker picked Kenny up in his arms.  “You are very welcome Kenny I’m glad I was able to help you.”

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m feeling real good Kenny so don’t you worry Okay?”

Kenny put his arms around Walker and gave him a big hug.  Then Amy did the same adding a kiss. "Thank you so much."

After they left Walker said to Alex.  “You know Alex seeing the looks on their faces makes it all worth it.”

“I’m glad to hear you say that Walker.

The week went by quickly and it was time for Walker to get his cast off.

“Are you ready to get this thing off Walker?”  Asked the doctor.

“I sure am.”

After a few minutes Walker was finally free of the cast.

“You will need to build up the strength in your arm Walker.  But don’t rush it and do too much.  Looking at these burns I am sure that you will have no scaring at all.”

“That’s the best news I have heard in a long time.”

“You can thank White Eagle for that.”

“I will don’t worry.”

“So get out of here. I have sick people to see.”

“We are out of here.”

Over the next several weeks Walker's legs got stronger and he was able to walk with no pain.  With time all his scars disappeared.  Walker worked out and got all his strength back. He looked as good as new thanks to White Eagle.

Walker was coming down stairs when Alex was walking up.

“Honey you look fabulous.”

“Thank you I feel great.  Walker replied.  “And to show you just how good I feel.”  Walker swooped Alex up in his arms and carried her up stairs to the bedroom and kick the door closed.  He put Alex down on the bed gently.  Then he laid down beside her.

“Oh how I missed being close to you Walker.”

“I missed you too Alex. More then you know. I have to go back to work on Monday and that leaves the weekend for you and me.  I’m not letting you out of my sight all weekend.”

“That’s okay with me.”

Walker put his arm around Alex and cuddled up as close to her as he could get.  Then his lips found hers and they met in a long heated kiss.  Walker and Alex spent the whole night making love.  They went for walks in the moonlight.

Walker returned to work on Monday and they threw a surprise party for him.

"Welcome back Walker.”  The captain said.

“Thank you, sir.  It’s great to be back.”

Two weeks later, Walker was presented with a metal for bravery, risking his life unselfishly to save others.  The two people whose lives he saved were there to see him get his award.
