The question has always been did they or didn’t they and if they did when?

This is when I think it happened.

He held her tightly as he remembered the terror of the past hour; starting with the phone call from Max Kale informing him that Alex was the next person scheduled to die; he didn’t even remember the drive to her apartment but the scene before him when he entered her door was one he knew he would never forget. His beautiful Alex, tied to a chair, her mouth covered with tape and a bomb hanging around her neck; his first instinct was just to remove it but her eyes had stopped him and ripping the tape off he listened in horror at the news that he had started the timer as soon as he opened her door and if he touched the bomb it would detonate. She had urged him to get out but he never even hesitated as he ran for scissors and came back with them to study the explosive device; she had again urged him to get out and instead he was trying to decide which wire to cut. He had kissed her then, pouring his heart and soul into it before making his decision and snipping a wire; the timer registered one second left and exhaling shakily he had removed the bomb and untied her.

She clung to him as she thought about how close she had come to death and marveled at his absolute refusal to leave her side and save himself; the kiss he had given her told her more than any words ever would about his feelings for her and she reveled in it. Her hands tangled in his hair and she tugged just enough to bring his head up so she could reach his lips.

This kiss was an affirmation they were alive and so much more; it spoke of passion as yet not explored between them and when they finally broke apart they were both deeply affected.

Reluctantly he put some distance between them and said, “Sweetheart, I called for back-up on the way over here, we’re going to have company very soon.”

Before any more words could be spoken DPD officers entered with guns drawn and recognizing the man they asked, “Everything okay Ranger Walker?”

He nodded towards the explosive device saying, “You better get the bomb squad out here to take care of that, but we’re okay.”

“What happened exactly?”

Alex gave her statement and they turned expectantly towards him. “Give me a minute will you?” He pulled her aside saying, “You can’t stay here tonight, why don’t you go on to the ranch; I’ll have a DPD unit follow you to check the house and the barn and have them stay close;  I’ll be home once I tie up the loose ends here.”

For a second she thought of arguing but one look at the man on the floor who was supposed to guard her…she went to her bedroom and packed a bag. Just before she left she said, “Call me when you’re on the way and I’ll start dinner for us.”

“Okay.” He wanted to kiss her again but settled for the wink he reserved only for her; the smile he got in return let him know that she understood.

When she arrived at his ranch she started to hand one of the officers her key to the house but realized that would cause way too much speculation; thinking fast she said, “I guess neither one of us was thinking clearly, let me call and he can tell you where he keeps a spare key.”

Dialing her own number she was relieved when he answered and she said, “I know you’re busy Walker, but I didn’t think to get your key to the house, I’m going to hand the phone to Officer Mills so you can tell him where he can find a spare.”

For a second he was puzzled because he knew she had a key just as he had a key to her place, they often times met after work at one place or the other to work on cases and go over testimony for trials; when the light dawned he hid his grin as he said, “Sorry, I didn’t think of it, put him on.”

A few minutes later the house and barn were pronounced clear and after receiving reassurances from Officer Mills that they would keep an eye out she took her bag inside and flopped down on the couch; the adrenaline rush from earlier had faded, now the only thing keeping her going was the knowledge Walker would be there soon.

The body had been removed, the bomb squad had come and gone, all the questions had been answered, he’d made the arrangements to have her place cleaned and repaired and the locks changed; there was only one thing left to do, he dialed his number.

“Hi, I’m getting ready to leave; do you still want to cook dinner or would you rather I pick something up on the way home?”

“Truthfully I haven’t even looked to see what you have here.”

“No problem, I’ll swing by CD’s and get us something; I promise not to stay long.”

“Sounds good, I’ll see you soon.”

A few minutes later he walked into CD’s, sat at a table and silently motioned for his mentor to join him.

Sitting down he asked, “What’s going on Cordell?”

“Kale almost got Alex today.”

“What happened, is she okay?”

Walker told him everything that had happened…well all but the kisses anyway.

“So let me see if I have this right, that maniac was going to blow her up and Alex was trying to get you to save yourself.”

That little tidbit had actually not even dawned on him until that instant but looking back he could see it very clearly. “I guess so.”

“Only instead of running you risked your life to save hers? You know if you’d cut the wrong wire both of you would have died.”

“I know; it was a chance I had to take.”

Standing up CD said, “I’m going to leave before I say something and get accused of meddling in your there anything else you wanted?”

“Actually I told Alex I’d bring home some dinner and what do you mean about meddling?”

“Well since you asked…think about this…she’d die for you and you’d die for her, it’s pretty danged obvious to me what’s going on here; so when are the two of you going to figure it out? Think about that while your food’s cooking.” He left the table and an idea came to him; he walked to the jukebox and selected a song he knew was appropriate for the moment.

Knowing exactly what CD was suggesting he wanted to deny it outright, but the words had hit home; if put in the same situation again his choice would again be to save her even if it meant losing his own life in the process. He was so deep in thought that he almost didn’t hear the familiar chords of the song that started playing but then he tuned into it.

I can't fight this feeling any longer
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow
What started out as friendship has grown stronger
I only wish I had the strength to let it show

I tell myself that I can't hold out forever
I say there is no reason for my fear
'Coz I feel so secure when we're together
You give my life direction, you make everything so clear

And even as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

No, I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars forever

No, I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
Or come crashing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore

My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been runnin' round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm following you girl
'Cause you take me to the places that alone I'd never find

And even as I wander I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars forever

No, I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
Or come crashing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore

Out of the corner of his eye CD watched as Walker stood up and approached; he figured he was fixing to catch Hell for his interference and braced himself for battle.

“Make sure you have everything ready by the time I get back.”

“Where you going?”

“I’m going to go ahead and put gas in my truck so I won’t have to stop after I leave, you have a problem with that?”

“Of course not.”

Climbing in his truck he started it up and headed for the gas station even though his gas gauge registered ¾ of a tank. Pulling up in front of the store he walked in and purchased a couple of things then drove around for a couple of minutes before going back to pick up the food.

As he drove home he couldn’t get the song or CD’s words out of his head; he also couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss he and Alex had shared just before DPD had arrived.

Hearing his truck in the driveway she watched through the window as he talked briefly with Officer Mills before coming inside with bags in his hands. She had no idea how to read the look on his face and she hesitantly asked, “Is everything okay?”

He handed her all but one of the bags he carried as he said, “I’m going to run up and change, be right back.”

Staring after him as he took the stairs two at a time she wondered at his strange mood then shrugging her shoulders she checked to see what CD had sent for them to eat.

A few minutes later he stood at the top of the stairs and just watched her; he was struck again by how beautiful she was and for the millionth time wondered what exactly she saw in him when she could have any man she wanted.

Feeling his eyes on her she looked up and saw him standing there; he had changed into a pair of old faded jeans and a t-shirt that molded to him like a second skin, it took all her willpower to force her mind back to the food she had put on the table.

Going on down the stairs he stopped in front of her and asked curiously, “Why did you try to get me to leave when you thought that bomb was going to go off?”

Caught off guard for a minute she replied, “Because I didn’t want you to get killed. Why didn’t you go?”

“That’s easy, I knew I was going to save you or die trying, because living without you…that idea was totally unacceptable.”

They both moved at the same time and found themselves locked in a passionate embrace; as their lips met over and over she pressed herself against him and when she realized he wasn’t going to pull away…she reached for the bottom of his t-shirt and he allowed her to pull it up and over his head; taking quick advantage she ran her hands over his back and his chest.

He allowed her free rein for a couple of minutes before he moved his hands to the buttons on her blouse and slowly undid them.

Momentarily shocked she looked into his eyes and let the garment slide to the floor, holding his gaze she found the courage she needed and reached for the clasp on her bra, it joined her blouse on the floor and she pressed her chest into his.

Fighting for control he asked, “Are you sure about this?”

“I’m sure.”

Before she even completed her assent he had scooped her up into his arms and carried her up to his room; he set her down beside the bed, pulled the covers back and said, “Last chance.”

In response she moved her hands to the button on his jeans, undid it and pulled the zipper down. She saw his eyes darken with desire and knew that it was really going to happen, they were about to become lovers.

They finished undressing each other and he tumbled her back onto the bed before following her down; they tempted, teased and explored before the need to become one could no longer be ignored.

Grabbing the bag he had brought upstairs earlier he reached in and pulled out what he had purchased at the store; she saw what it was and taking the box from him she opened it and took out one of the little foil packages.

The next time they became aware of their surroundings he turned them so they were facing each other; his hand was a little unsteady as he caressed the side of her face and said “I told you I was out of practice, next time will be better.”

Giving him an incredulous look she said, “I don’t think it can get better than that, it was amazing.”

Flashing her the grin she had grown to love he responded, “Believe me honey, that was just a taste of things to come for you and I.” Climbing out of bed he held out his hand saying, “Come on, let’s take a shower.”

Taking note of the look in her eyes he asked in disbelief,” “Are you trying to tell me you’ve never taken a shower with a man before?”

It was obvious that he was totally at ease standing naked before her, but she was much more reserved; he seemed to have no idea how difficult it had been for her earlier to disrobe in front of him. Hesitantly she put her hand in his and allowed him to guide her to the bathroom.

Realizing how nervous she was he set about trying to relax her. “I’ll let you set the water temperature as long as it’s not cold.”

When they got in he immediately took the lead, he washed her hair first and feeling her start to relax he carefully washed the rest of her body.

It was an experience she knew she’d never forget and with trembling hands she took the washcloth from him saying, “My turn.” She followed the same sequence he had used and by the time she was finished there was no doubt how much he wanted her.

Knowing his control was hanging by a thread he warningly said, “You better get out and turn the hot water off or I won’t be held responsible for my actions.”

Giving him a deep kiss she whispered, “Don’t move; I’ll be right back.”

Wondering what she was up to he watched her leave and when she returned a minute later with a familiar packet in her hand he tugged her back inside with him saying, “You are a very fast learner.”

Much later they got dressed and went back downstairs to heat up their dinner; when they finished and the leftovers were put away he said, “Let’s sit outside for a while.”

She followed him out the door and leaned into him after he sat down on the swing; as his arm went around her she remembered the card he had given her a while back. “Wish # 1 fulfilled,” she tugged his head down to hers and kissed him before saying, “That was wish # 2.”

Catching on he replied, “Perhaps 3 and 4 can be fulfilled in the morning.”

For the next few minutes they were quiet, each lost in their own thoughts, just enjoying being together as new lovers.

“Walker, as horrible as today was I will never regret it.”

“Neither will I.”

A little while later they went back inside and she started towards the guest room as she said, “We should go to bed; tomorrow you’ll be chasing Max Kale again.”

Grabbing her hand he asked, “Where are you going?”

Putting her arms around him she said, “Honey, Kale is a madman and I don’t want you going after him when you’re sleep deprived…and let’s face the facts, if I go up those stairs with you, neither one of us will get any sleep tonight.”

Even though he knew she was right he didn’t like it; with a deep sigh he sealed his lips to hers then whispered, “If you change your mind you know where to find me.”

When morning came he made his way downstairs and started the coffee before going into her room; she looked so peaceful that he hated to wake her up but couldn’t resist kissing her. As she opened her eyes he said, “Wishes 3&4 will have to wait, I slept later than normal; coffee will be ready in a few minutes, I have to take care of Amigo and the others.” Winking at her he added, “I’m sure they’re all wondering why they didn’t fed last night.”

Laughing she replied, “Somehow you got…distracted.”

Kissing her again he said, “That’s one way of putting it; I’ll see you at work later.”

A couple of hours later she looked up and saw him walk into the office, going to him she hugged him closer than she normally did and made a happy sound in her throat.

He returned her hug and kept his arm around her as he steered them over to a more private spot. When she informed him that she hadn’t slept well because of Kale he whispered, “You should have come upstairs.”

Keeping her voice low as well she answered, “You know why I didn’t.”

CD interrupted them by reading from Kale’s file and they exchanged a look of frustration at his usual bad timing.

A couple of minutes later Jimmy arrived as well and she had to reassure him that she was okay.

Hoping for a couple more minutes with Walker she was disappointed when his phone rang and it turned out to be Kale; she watched him disappear out the door and silently told him to be careful.

Observing her without trying to be obvious about it Jimmy sensed there was something different about the way she was acting; the look of worry on her face was normal but there was something else in her eyes, something that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.

“You sure you’re okay, looks to me like you’re a million miles away.”

“Just worried about Walker; there’s no doubt in my mind that Kale plans to kill him.”

“Easier said than done, you know that.”

CD and Alex watched as Walker picked himself up; he had hurled himself through the window just before the house exploded.

Knowing it was finally over she wanted to throw herself into his arms and hold on tight, but settled for taking his hand in hers as she gave him a look that let him know what she was thinking.

Keeping her hand firmly clutched in his he squeezed and gave her a wink to let her know that not only did he understand but wanted the same thing.

It wasn’t long before Jimmy arrived on the scene and upon learning that Kale had blown himself up by accident he laughed when CD muttered, “That’s poetic justice.”

All four of them looked at the carnage around them and gave thanks that it was finally over, they could relax again.

CD gave Jimmy a little nudge and nodded at the joined hands of Walker and Alex, there was definitely something going on between the two of them.

Nodding his head in agreement Jimmy mischievously said, “Looks like the only thing left to do is the paperwork.”

Closing his eyes Walker asked, “Did you have to remind me?” Giving Alex an apologetic look he said, “I better head back and get started on that, you ready to go?”

“You two go on, I’ll catch a ride back with Jimmy.”

The two men looked at each other and grinned as their friends quickly climbed into the truck and left.

Soon as they were out of sight she scooted over to the middle and after fastening her seatbelt she laid her head against his shoulder. “Walker, after you get done with paperwork…what are your plans?”

“I’m thinking I might be persuaded to take a very special lady out to dinner and if she plays her cards right…maybe even dancing.”

“Mind if I suggest a counterproposal?”

“What do you have in mind?”

“While you do your paperwork I could go shopping, head out to the ranch, make my turkey meatloaf and wait for you to get home.”

“Then what?”

Giving his cheek a kiss she whispered, “Use your imagination Cowboy.”
