Broken Trust

By Hussy

Walker and Trivette had spent the last three nights on a stakeout.  According to their sources there would be a big drug deal going down.  They didn’t know what day; just that it would be within the next five nights.  Finally it paid off on the third night at a warehouse on Diplomat Drive.  They saw several suspects arrive.  Trivette called in the troops that were standing by waiting for the signal.

“Is everyone ready?”  Trivette asked.

 “Ready, Trivette.”

Walker busted through the door with the Ram like he had done many times before.  Everyone scattered when Walker busted through the door.  Walker and Trivette got out of the truck and jumped some of the suspects that would rather fight then give up. Walker took his man down quickly using his martial arts and Trivette with his fists.

“Walker, hit the ground!”  Trivette yelled.

One of the drug dealers had Walker in his sites.  Walker dove for cover as the guy fired.  Trivette fired, his aim deadly.  Walker was grazed in the arm.

“Walker, how bad is it?”

“I’m okay, thanks to you. It’s just a flesh wound.”

“I’ll call an ambulance.”

“Trivette, no I don’t need one, you can drive me there.”

“Are you sure?”

The Rangers seized cocaine with the street value of more then 3 million dollars.   A great weeks work.

“Come on partner, let’s get you to the hospital and get the arm looked at.”

Walker and Trivette arrived at the hospital and they took him in right away.

“Okay let me take a look at that, Ranger.”  The doctor said.  "It’s not bad, just a flesh wound.  You won’t even need stitches."

After dressing Walker’s wound, he excused himself for a few minutes and came back with a needle.

“I’m going to give you a shot to help prevent infection.”

“Is that really necessary?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Eew, I’ll just wait outside Walker.”

“Trivette, you wuss. He hates needles.”  Walker told the doctor, laughing.

“Okay there you are. I want you to take tomorrow off, Ranger Walker.”

“Doctor, I don’t need the day off.  I’m fine.”

“I’m the doctor and I say you do and if you argue, I’ll make it two days.”

“Okay, have it your way.  Thanks doctor. Let’s go Trivette.”  Trivette drove Walker home.  It was 3 AM by the time they left the hospital.

“Trivette, why don’t you just spend the night at the ranch?  It’s too late to go home now.”

“You're right I think I will.  You can take me home later to pick up my car.  That is, if you’re up to it.”

“The doctor made me take the day off tomorrow.”

“Oh that must have gone over really well.”  Trivette said, grinning, knowing his partner.

The next morning Walker took Trivette to get his car and went to C.D.’s to wait for his lunch date with the most beautiful ADA in all of Texas.  As Walker sat there waiting for Alex, he started to feel a little sick to his stomach.

“Great, all I need is to come down with something.”  Walker mumbled to himself.  “Hey there, Cowboy.”

“Hello there, beautiful.”  Alex grabbed Walker’s arm as she bent down to kiss him.  Not knowing he had been shot, she noticed the pain on his face, even when he tried to cover it up.

“Walker, you are hurt.  What happened?”

“Nothing Alex.  It’s just a scratch.”

“You were hurt in the drug bust last night, weren’t you?”

“I said it’s nothing, just a scratch.”

“Yeah and you were not going to tell me about it were you?”

“Alex, will you just order lunch and drop it please?”   Walker sat there picking at his lunch, not eating more then a few bites.

“Walker, what's wrong? You're not talking and you don’t look well.  I thought you said it was only a scratch?”

“It’s not that, Alex.  I just don’t feel well.  I think I’m going to go home and lay down awhile, okay?”

“I think that's a good idea, Walker.  I’ll come out after work and see how you’re feeling.”

“Okay thanks.  I’m sorry about lunch.”

“Walker, you’re sick.  There’s nothing to be sorry about.  Now if you had stood me up again, that would be different.  Now go.”

“Okay, see you after work.”

Walker went home and Alex went back to work.  But first she went by Trivette’s desk.  He was doing the paper work for the bust.

“Oh hello, Alex.  What can I do for you?”

“It’s Walker, there’s something wrong.”

“You found out about his arm.”

“Yes, but that’s not what I am talking about.”

“Then what are you talking about?”

“He doesn’t look good, he’s sick.  He didn’t eat lunch and he said he was going home to lay down.”

“That’s not like Walker, for sure.  I’ll tell you what, I should be finished here in a few hours…I’ll go out and check on him okay?”

“Okay, thank you Jimmy.”

“You’re welcome and don’t worry.”

After finishing the paper work, Trivette went out to the ranch to check on Walker.  He knocked on the door but there was no answer so he went inside.  Trivette checked around and then went upstairs to Walker’s bedroom and found him fast asleep.  This worried Trivette; Walker would never lie down in the middle of the day.  Trivette stood there for several minutes making sure his friend was okay.  Then he went outside and checked on the horses and made sure everything was okay there.

“Well there’s nothing for me to do but let him rest.  I’ll come back after work.”

Trivette called Alex on his cell phone on the way back to the office.

“Alex, it’s Jimmy.”

“Jimmy, what did you find out?”

“Nothing much, Alex. He was asleep and I didn’t want to wake him up.  You’re right, there is something wrong.  Walker never sleeps in the daytime.  I’m going back out there after work.”

“Me too. I told Walker I’d see him after work."

Later after work Trivette and Alex headed out to the ranch to see how Walker was feeling.  Walker was sitting in his chair with his eyes closed, his head leaning back against the back of the chair.  Alex knocked quietly on the door not wanting to wake him if he was resting.  She peeked in the door and saw Walker asleep in the chair.  “Walker must be feeling bad if he didn’t hear me come in.” She thought to herself.  She gently kissed Walker on the cheek and he opened his eyes.

“How are you feeling, Walker?”

“I’ve had better days.”

“Walker, I think you should go to the doctor.”

“Alex, don’t start that again.  People get the flu all the time and they don’t go running to the doctor.”

“I’m worried about you, that’s all.”

“You worry too much.”  Walker said as he grabbed Alex.

“Come here.”  Walker gave Alex a kiss on the check.

“That’s all I rate is a kiss on the cheek?”

“Until I feel better yes.”

“Now look who’s worried.”   Just then Trivette walked in the door.

“Hi partner, how are you feeling?”

“I’ll be fine.”

“I was here earlier today but you were in bed asleep so I left you alone.

“Walker, have you had anything to eat today?”

“No, I can’t eat.”

“You need something, I’m going to go fix you some soup.” Alex said and she went into the kitchen.

“She is just as stubborn as you are Walker, no sense in arguing with her.”

“Yeah I know, tell me about it.”  Alex came back out with some soup and crackers for Walker.

“Here you are, darling.  You need to eat something, even if it’s only a few bites.”   Walker ate a few bites of the soup.

“Walker, if you don’t feel better tomorrow, I’m going to take you to the hospital if I have to drag you.”

The next morning Alex was talking to Trivette at Ranger Headquarters as Walker came through the doors.

“What are you doing here, Walker?”  Alex asked.

“I’m working, what else?”

“You still don’t look like you feel good.”

“I’m fine.  Now would you please go to work and let me do mine?”

“Yes, sir.”  Walker spent the first few hours on paperwork.  Then he and Trivette went to follow up some leads on an attempted murder.  They went to a biker bar where the person hung out.  They walked up to the bartender and asked for Ed.

"Sorry Ranger, never heard of him.”

“I know for a fact that he hangs out here, now I’m going to ask you one more time.  Is Ed here?”  Walker asked again.

“You heard the man, Ranger. Now get lost or we're going to have to throw you out.”

“I’d like to see you try.”  Walker said.

All of a  sudden Walker and Trivette were jumped by four men. They took care of all four in short order.

“You guys get out of here now before I run you all in.”  Trivette told them.  Trivette noticed Walker had trouble taking the two down that jumped him and when he looked at Walker, he was having trouble catching his breath.

“Walker, are you alright?”

“I’m okay.”

“That’s it Walker, get in the truck.  I’m taking you to the doctor and I don’t want to hear any back talk.”

“Yeah, okay.  You’re right.”

Trivette drove Walker to the hospital.  The same doctor was on call that treated his arm a few days earlier.

“What can I do for you this time, Ranger?”   The doctor asked.  Walker explained everything to the doctor.  After examining Walker, he talked to both he and Trivette.

“I have no idea what is going on with you, Ranger Walker, but I don’t think it’s the flu.  I’m going to run some tests to see what is going on.  Oh, Ranger, if you don’t mind, I’d also like to run a test for AIDS. It’s just routine. It’s something I'd like to do just to make sure okay?”

“I can tell you it’s not that, doctor.”

“As I said, it’s just routine.”

“If you must. Just get it over with so I can get out of here.”  After the doctor was done taking everything he needed, he let Walker go home.

“I will have the results of the tests in a few days but in the meantime, I want you to stay home.  Here is a prescription that should help.”

“Okay, doctor, thank you.”

“Okay, Walker, where am I taking you?”

“Alex should be waiting at C.D.’s by now.  Let’s run by there for a little while and then one of you can take me home.”

“We both can. You need someone to drive the Ram home.”

“Oh, that’s right.”

Sure enough, Alex was waiting there for Walker and Trivette.

“It’s about time you two showed up. What’s wrong, Walker?”

“Alex, we just got back from the hospital.  I took Walker there to get a checkup.”

“Oh you did?  What did the doctor have to say?”

“He doesn’t think it’s the flu.  He is running tests to find out what is wrong.”

“Walker, I don’t like the sound of this.  What could be wrong?”

“Alex, don’t start worrying about nothing.”

“I can’t help it.  I love you.  You look exhausted, Walker.  We should get you home.”  “Yeah, I do need to get home.  Do you mind driving me?  Trivette will have to drive the Ram and then you will have to bring him back here to get his car.”

“No problem, be glad to. Lets get you out of here.”

Alex stayed at the ranch with Walker for the two days they were waiting on the results of the test.  Finally, Walker got the call.  The doctor wanted to see him in his office right away.

“The doctor wants me in right now, Alex.  It doesn’t sound good.”

“I’m going with you, Walker.”

“Alex, I want to do this alone.”

“Walker, don’t start shutting me out. You can’t do everything alone.  I’m going even if I have to drive myself.”

“Yes, you probably would.  I don’t know what the doctor is going to tell me so I don’t know what’s going to happen.  I wish you would let me go alone.”

“If what the doctor has to say is bad news, you’re going to need me.”

“Let’s get it over with.”  Walker told Alex.

Walker and Alex waited in the waiting room for them to call him in.

“Alex, would you do me a favor and let me talk to the doctor alone first?”

“Is that what you really want?”

“I think it’s better that way.”

“Okay, then I’ll be right here if you need me.”

“What would I ever do without you?”  Alex gave Walker a big kiss then the nurse came in to get Walker. "Ranger Walker, the doctor can see you now.”  The nurse said.  The nurse took Walker into the Doctor’s office.

“Have a seat, Ranger Walker, and the doctor will be right with you.”

A few minutes later the doctor came in.

“Hello, Ranger Walker.”

“Hello, doctor.  What did you find out?  I know there is something wrong.”

“We did find something, Ranger Walker, and I’m afraid it’s not good news.”

“What is it?”  Walker asked.

“I’m afraid you tested positive for HIV.”

“WHAT?  That’s impossible you must have made a mistake, doctor.”

“We ran it twice to make sure.  I’m sorry, Ranger Walker, but there is no mistake."  Walker was devastated.  He felt like his whole world was crashing in around him. "Ranger Walker, are you married or do you have a girlfriend?”

“I have a fiancée.”

“Is she here with you?”

“Yes, she is in the waiting room.”

“If you have had any sexual intercourse she will also have to be tested, Ranger. I’ll have her brought in.”

“Ranger, you have no choice. We need to get her tested.  Besides, I think you can really use her company right now.”

The doctor had the nurse bring Alex into the office.

“Miss Cahill, could you come with me please?  The doctor would like to see you.”  Alex followed the nurse to the doctor’s office.  Right away Alex could see something was terribly wrong by the shocked look on Walker’s face.

“Walker, what is it?”  Alex asked.

“Miss Cahill?”

“Yes, doctor, what’s going on?”

“You’d better sit down.”

“I don’t want to sit.  I want to know what is wrong with Walker.”

“Miss Cahill, there is no easy way to say this but I am afraid Ranger Walker has tested positive for HIV.”

“HIV?  That’s impossible!  I don’t believe it!”

“I’m sorry but there is no mistake.  Since you and Walker have been together, we need to have you tested too.”

“How could this happen?  I don’t understand.”

“I don’t know, Miss Cahill.  I’ll give you a few minutes alone.”  The doctor said, then he left the room.  As soon as the doctor left, Alex went to Walker and put her arms around him and held him tight.

“Walker, I’m so sorry. I don’t know what to say to you.”

“Don’t say anything, just hold me."  Alex held Walker in her arms until the doctor returned.

“Are you ready, Miss Cahill?”

“Do we have to do it right now?  I don’t want to leave him right now.”

“Alex, I’ll be fine. You go get the test done and I’ll be in the waiting room.”

“Are you sure?  I don’t like leaving you alone right now.”

“Alex, will you just go?”

“Okay. I'll be back as soon as I can.”

Alex returned to the doctor’s office after getting the test done.  Walker was just sitting there.

“Walker, we can go now.  I’m all done.  Walker?”

“Oh Alex, I didn’t hear you.”

“You look like you were a million miles away.  The doctor will call when he has the results.”

“Alex, if you are sick because of me…I don’t think I can live with that.”

“Walker, if I do turn out HIV positive it won’t be your fault and I don’t want you blaming yourself.”

“Let’s just get out of here.”  Alex took Walker home.

“Alex, I don’t know if I can handle this.  I am so confused right now I don’t know what to think.  I need to be alone tonight, Alex. If you don’t mind.”

“I do mind, Walker. I think you need someone tonight.”

“Just give me tonight to deal with this and I’ll see you tomorrow. Please, Alex.”

“Okay if that’s what you really want, but I don’t like leaving you.  I’ll be at home if you need anything.”

As soon as Alex got home she called Trivette.

“Jimmy can you please come over to my place?  I need to talk to you.”

“Sure Alex, but what’s wrong?  I can tell you’ve been crying.”

“Not on the phone, Jimmy. I’ll tell you when you get here.”

“I’ll be right there, Alex."

Trivette wasted no time getting to Alex’s apartment.  Trivette could see Alex’s red swollen eyes.

“Alex, what is it?  What did the doctor have to say?”

Alex tried to tell Trivette but she started to cry again.  Trivette held Alex until she stopped crying.

“Please, tell me what happened?”

Alex took a deep breath.  “Jimmy, Walker tested positive for HIV.”

“Alex, you can’t be serious. There is no way in hell.”

“That’s what we said, but it’s true. The doctor tested me too.  He’ll call when they get the results.”

“NO!  I refuse to believe it.”

“Where in God's name could he have gotten it from?”

“We have no idea Jimmy, but Walker is going to need us.”

“I’m going out to see him.”

“Jimmy, no, not tonight.  He needs to be by himself.  Wait until tomorrow.”

“Yeah, that sounds like Walker.  Okay, but I’m going out there first thing in the morning.”

Alex was so upset she couldn’t stop crying.  Trivette sat her down on the couch and held her while she cried.  She finally cried herself to sleep.  Trivette got up carefully and went into the bedroom and got a blanket to cover Alex with.  After covering her, he left quietly.

Trivette went to C.D.’s to have a few drinks.  He sat in Alex and Walker’s booth.  After a while, one of the Rangers came in and spotted Trivette sitting in a corner booth by himself.  “Hi Jimmy, are you alright?”

“No, not really.  I got some bad news and I’m not handling it well.”

“Would you like to talk about it?”

“I can’t, not right now.”

“Okay, then can I buy you a beer?”

“Now that you can do.”  He went to the bar and returned a few minutes later with a beer.  “Thanks for the drink, Bob.”

“You’re welcome.”  The two sat there having drinks for a while then Trivette decided he better get home but he had too much to drink.

“Jimmy, I think I better drive you home.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right.  I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be a bother.”

“It’s no bother, Jimmy.  Let’s get you home.”  As they were headed out the door, another Ranger came in.

“Phil, you’re just the man I need.”

“Oh, and just what do you need?”

“Could you do us a big favor and drive Jimmy’s car home?  I’m going to drive him home.”

“Sure, no problem.  Let’s go.”

The next morning Trivette woke up early and took a shower.  Then he headed out to the ranch to see Walker.  All the way out there he tried to think of what to say once he saw Walker.  But it was no use; he had no idea what he was going to say.  Trivette got to the ranch and found Walker in the barn.  He was taking his anger out on a bale of hay.  Trivette stood there a few minutes watching Walker.  He could feel Walker’s anger as well as see it.  He too felt the same anger over what had happened to his friend.

“Do you feel better now, Walker?”  Trivette asked.

“As a matter of fact, I do.  How long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough."

The two men went to the house to get something to drink.

“Walker, Alex told me what the doctor said.  I don’t know what to say man. I find this all hard to swallow. “

“Yeah, well how do you think I feel?”

“I don’t understand how you could have gotten it.”

“I have no idea, but if Alex is sick too, Trivette, that’ll kill me.  I know I won’t be able to live with that.”

“Walker, Alex is going to be okay, I just know it.  You know I’m here for you if you want to talk or for what ever else you need.”

“I know and I thank you.”

“Trivette, I hope you know this will mean the end of our partnership.”

“Why, Walker?”

“I’m going to resign.”

“No, Walker, you can’t do that!”

“I don’t have a choice.  I can’t risk giving it to anyone.  And you know how I feel about sitting behind a desk.”

Trivette was trying his best to hold his temper but it was getting harder and harder.  Trivette walked out of the house.  Walker followed him to the porch and put his arm around him.

“Trivette, there is a barn full of hay.  Its great for letting out all that anger you’re feeling right now.”

“What are you?  A mind reader?”  Trivette walked out to the barn and started in on a bale of hay just as Walker did earlier.  After a few minutes Walker went out to the barn and watched Trivette.  Walker felt bad, but not only for himself.  He could see what this was doing to his loved ones.  After Trivette was done, Walker stepped in.

“Well, do you feel better now?”

“As a matter of fact, I do, Walker.”

Trivette sat down on one of the bales of hay he and Walker didn’t destroy.  Trivette stared down at the ground.  Walker went over and sat by Trivette’s side and put his arm around him.

"Easy my friend.  We will get through this."

Trivette couldn’t hold back any longer and started to cry.

“Let it out, Trivette, it’s okay.”  Just then Alex walked in.

“Is this a guy thing or can a lady join in?”

“Alex, what are you doing here?”

“I thought I would see how you are doing.  What in the world hit this place?  Or should I ask, who?   As if I didn’t already know.”  Alex walked over to Walker and Trivette.  Alex reached for Walker and he backed away.

“Walker, what’s wrong?  Why did you do that?”

“Alex, I’m sorry I didn’t mean anything."

Trivette went outside to give Walker and Alex some time alone.

“I just can’t get it out of my mind that I may have given this to you and if not, I still can if we are not careful.”

“There is no harm in a hug, Walker.  We went through all of this with Lucas.”

“I know that” Walker put his arms around Alex and gave her a hug.

Trivette and Alex spent the rest of the day out at the ranch with Walker.  They could see Walker was sick even when he tried to hide it. He lacked energy and was too quiet. They all sat on the porch and watched the sunset.

“Walker, what are you thinking about?”  Alex asked.

“I was thinking about Lucas and how he must have felt when I told him he had AIDS.  For the first time, I really know how he must have felt.  Lucas was a wonderful kid.  Why do bad things happen to good people?”

“It’s getting late, Walker. I better get going.”  Trivette said.  “I’ll see you sometime tomorrow.”

“Okay, Trivette, thanks for being here.”

“Anytime, Walker.”

“Walker, I want to stay with you tonight.”

“Alex, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I think it is, Walker.”

“Alex, having you here is too tempting.  I don’t know if I can control myself.”

“I don’t want you to control yourself, silly.  I love you.”

“I love you too, Alex.  You are the most precious thing in my life and I don’t want to jeopardize that.”

“You won’t, Walker.  There are ways to protect ourselves.”

“Yes, Alex, but I don’t have anything here.”

“I do. I brought everything we need.”

“Oh you did?”

“Yes, I did.”  Alex said smiling.

“You think you’re clever, don’t you?”  Walker pulled Alex in close to him and hugged her tightly.

“Are you sure about this, Alex?”

“I have never been so sure of anything in my life, Walker.”

Walker took Alex upstairs to the bedroom.  He watched Alex as she unbuttoned her blouse slowly, one button at a time.  Then she slipped it off of her shoulders and let it fall to the floor.  She slipped off her pants and kicked them out of the way.  She reached around to unsnap her bra.

“Here, allow me.”  Walker said with a smile.  He reached around and unfastened her bra, letting it fall to the floor.  Next, Alex started to unbutton Walker’s shirt.  Then she slipped his pants down, letting them fall to the floor.  Walker stepped out of his pants and kicked them aside.  They both slid their underwear off.  Alex looked at Walker and his muscular chest.  She smiled as she ran her hands across his chest.  Walker lay down across the bed and pulled Alex down on top of him.  He gave her a small kiss on the cheek.  His heart ached to kiss her soft lips but knew he couldn’t.

“I wish I could kiss you, Alex.”

“Walker, you need to concentrate on what we can do.”

“You’re right again.”  Things started to heat up fast between the lovers.  Walker entered Alex.  He could hear her soft moans.  Just as they were about to climax together, Walker pulled away.

“I’m sorry, Alex, I just can’t do it.  I’m sorry.”

“Walker, it’s okay really.  I should have known you couldn’t do it.  Just hold me, Walker.  As long as I can be close to you, that’s all that matters.”

“Are you upset with me, Alex?”

“Walker, how could I be upset with you?  You’re thinking about me and I love you for it.”

Walker and Alex fell asleep in each other’s arms.  Walker had a restless night.  He didn’t sleep well at all.  That next morning they were expecting to get a call about Alex’s test results.  Around 10 AM they got the call for Alex to come in and see the doctor about the results.

“Are you ready, Alex?”

“As ready as I will ever be, I guess.”

“Alex, you’re shivering.  Are you okay?”

“Walker, I’m sorry.  I’m trying to be brave, but I’m so scared.”  Walker took Alex in his arms and held her.

“I’m so sorry for putting you through this.”

“Walker, it’s not your fault.”

“I feel in my heart that everything will turn out okay today, Alex.”

“I guess we’ll know soon.”

One hour later they were sitting in the doctor’s office waiting for him to come in.  Alex was still shaking.  Then the door opened and the doctor entered.

“Miss Cahill. Ranger Walker. How are you today?”

“Very nervous, doctor.  What did you find out?”  Walker asked.  The doctor sat down at his desk and glanced at the test results and then looked up at Alex.

“What does it say, doctor?”  Alex asked.

“Miss Cahill, you look nervous.  Don’t worry, you’re young and very healthy.  Your tests are negative.”  Walker grabbed Alex and hugged her.

“Oh thank you, Lord.”  Walker said.  Walker looked like the weight of the world was lifted off his shoulders.  Alex was so relieved she started to cry but she also felt guilty because she was healthy when Walker was not as lucky.

“You are a very lucky lady.”

“Walker, I’m sorry I couldn’t give you the same good news.”

“Me too, doctor, but at least Alex is okay.”

“I want to check you over and give you something that will help you feel better.  The fact that you are in such good physical shape will work to your advantage.”

After they were done at the doctor’s office they headed to Ranger headquarters to give Trivette the good news.  When they came in, Trivette was on the phone.

“I have to go, I’ll call you back.”  Trivette said.

“You have a smile on your face, Walker.   Does that mean you’re okay, Alex?”

“Yes, Jimmy, that’s what it means.”

“Oh thank God.”  Trivette gave Alex a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“Walker, that must take a big load off of you.”

“It sure does, Trivette.”  Walker turned to Alex.

“Alex, now that I know you are okay I need to get myself together and learn to deal with this.  I am going out to the reservation for a few days, okay?”

“Are you going to talk to White Eagle?”

“Yes.  If I ever needed him, it’s now.”

“That’s good, Walker. I think that’s a wonderful idea.  Don’t worry about me, I’ll take care of the ranch while you’re gone.”

“Alex, I need to go by the ranch and pick up a few things.  Are you ready to go?”

“Yeah, any time Walker.”  Trivette gave Walker a hug and a pat on the back.

“I hope White Eagle is able to help you, Walker.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“You take care of yourself, my friend.”

“I will, Trivette.  Thanks.”

Walker took Alex to the ranch and picked up a few things and after kissing Alex good-bye, he headed out to the reservation.

After being gone for two days, he returned home.  Alex’s car was there but he couldn’t find Alex anywhere.  He checked the barn and found Angel missing.  He knew right away where to find her.  Walker saddled Ranger and went to find Alex.  She was right where he thought she would be, at the lake.  She was sitting at the edge looking out at the water.

“Do you want company or do you want to keep the lake all to yourself?”

“Walker!”  Alex yelled.

“I sure missed you, Cowboy.  No, I don’t want it all to myself.  But now that you’re here, it’s perfect.”  Walker put his arm around Alex and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“Did you find White Eagle?”

“No, he wasn’t there.  I waited for two days.  I really needed to talk to him.”

“Walker, if I know White Eagle, he will probably come looking for you in the next few days.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.  He always knows when I need him.” Sure enough White Eagle showed up at the ranch a few days later.

“White Eagle, am I glad you see you my friend.  I need to talk to you.  I’m in trouble, White Eagle.”

“It is good to see you as well, my friend.  The spirits have sent me to talk to you, Washo.  You must listen to what I have to say.”

“I will listen to your words.”

“The white doctors medicine is bad.”

“What do you mean, White Eagle?”

“The doctors words are false.  You cannot trust this one.  There is another doctor you and your friends trust with your life.  Go to this doctor and tell him what is going on.”

“I don’t know what is going on here, White Eagle, but you have never been wrong yet.  I’ll do as you say.”  When Walker went to thank White Eagle, he was gone.  Walker went to the doctor White Eagle spoke about, a doctor that had saved his life several times over the years, and the lives of Alex and Trivette.

“Come in, Walker. It sounded urgent on the phone.  Tell me what it is I can do for you?”

“I was told about a week ago I was HIV positive and now I have reasons to believe it is all false.”

“You mean a mistake on the doctors part?”

“No, I mean I think he is doing this on purpose. I think he’s giving me something to make me sick.  Here is everything he gave me to take."

“Walker, you had a complete physical 6 months ago and there was nothing wrong with you then and I don’t think there is now.  I’ll tell you what I am going to do.  I am going to give you another complete check up and run another HIV test and also a test to see just what drugs show up in your blood stream.  I am going to put a rush on this and take it down personally and wait for the results.  It will take a few hours so after we are done, go have dinner or something and come back in 2 hours.”  After the doctor was finished, he sent Walker out while he took the tests down.  Walker didn’t say anything to Alex or Trivette.  He didn’t want to get their hopes up in case things didn’t turn out.  The two hours seemed to drag by, but finally, it was time.

“Okay, Walker.  I have everything I need to know here.  You have some drugs in your system that should never be there.  No wonder you’re sick.  Some of them we haven’t even identified yet.”

“How about the HIV, doctor?”  Walker asked.

“Oh that.  The doctor said with a smile.  If all of my patients were as healthy as you were, I would be out of a job.  Walker, there is not one thing wrong with you other than the drugs he was giving you.”

“You mean I’m okay?”

“Yes, that’s what I mean.”

Walker’s eyes filled with tears. “But, why?”

“I don’t know, Walker, but I’m sure you’ll find out.”

“You got that right.”

“Not tonight you don’t.  The doctor will be there tomorrow.  Tonight belongs to you and your friends and I’m sure they will be delighted to hear the good news.”

“You’re right, he will wait.  I need to go tell Alex and Trivette the good news.  I don’t know how I can ever thank you for what you’ve done for me.”

“Just pay the bill, Walker.  I just did my job.”  He said laughing. "I would like to put you in the hospital for a few days to get the drugs out of your system.  You may have a few rough days but if I know you, it’s out of the question, right?”

“Right, but thanks, I’ll be okay.”

“I know you will. Now get out of here so I can get home.”

Walker rushed down to C.D.’s.  It was after 5:00 and he knew they would be there waiting for him.  Alex and Trivette were sitting at the bar and didn’t see him walk in.  Walker grabbed Alex from behind and planted a long passionate kiss on her.  They were both shocked and didn’t know what to think.  Walker picked Alex up and twirled her around several times before putting her down.  He put his arms around her and gave her a big hug and a few more kisses.

“Walker, do you want to let us in on what has you in such a good mood?”  Trivette asked.  “Yeah, Walker, and why did you kiss me like that?”

“I kissed you because I wanted to.”

“What gives, Walker?”

“Okay you two, are you ready for this?  I just got back from seeing my regular doctor and guess what?”

“What, damn it?”  Trivette shouted.

“I am not HIV positive!  I am not even sick!  That other doctor was giving me drugs to make me sick.” Walker explained everything to Alex and Trivette.

“Oh my god!  Walker, you’re okay?”  Alex asked to make sure.

“I sure am, Alex.”  Walker said with a big smile on his face.  Trivette jumped up and the three friends hugged and laughed and cried together.

“This is great, Walker.  Does this mean I have my partner back again?”

“It sure does, Trivette.”

“It’s going to take a few days to get all the drugs out of my system and the next few days are going to be rough but when I am feeling better, you will have your partner back.”  “Walker you can count on us to be there to help you through it, you know that don’t you?”

“Yes, I do and I wouldn’t have it any other way."

Walker kissed Alex again several times.

“Walker, if you keep that up you are going to wear out her lips.”  Trivette said with a big grin.

“I sure missed those lips.”  Walker replied.

Walker whispered to Alex.  “Now I can show you once again how much I love you without being afraid of hurting you.”

Alex looked into Walker eyes with a tear running down her cheek.

“Yes you sure can.  I love you so much.”

“I want to thank you for standing by me, Alex.  Most women would have run at the first sign of trouble.”

“I am not ‘most women’, Walker.”

“Oh believe me, I know.  You are one of a kind and you’re all mine.”

Walker went through a rough few days but Alex and Trivette were there to help him through it.  He wanted to be in good condition when he made the arrest.  Alex got the search warrant and the warrant for the doctor’s arrest.

“Walker, everything is ready whenever you feel up to it.”

“That’s great Alex, thanks.  I'll do it tomorrow.”

“How are you feeling, darling?”

“Better than I've felt in a long time.  I don’t know what I would have done without you and Trivette.”

“What are friends for, Walker?”  Trivette said as he came in the room.  "So, when are we paying that doctor a visit?”

“Is tomorrow soon enough?”

“No, but it will do.”

The next morning Walker and Trivette went to the doctor’s office as soon as he opened.

“Ranger Walker, you don’t have an appointment today, do you?”

“No, I don’t.  Is he in?”

“Yes, but he’s with a patient right now.”

“Not for long.”

“Ranger Walker, what’s going on?”

“Trivette, do me a favor and explain to her what is going on.  I’m going in.”

“Okay, but keep your cool partner.”

“I’ll try.”  Walker opened the door and walked in.  The doctor could see by the look on Walker’s face that he was in trouble.

“Miss Hawkins, will you excuse me please?”

“Sure doctor and thank you.”

“Walker, what can I do for you?”  He asked.

“I think you already know.  I just want to know why?  What did I ever do to you?  You’re under arrest.”  Trivette heard the yelling and went in to see if Walker was okay.  Walker turned to see who was coming in and then he had his back turned.  The doctor opened the desk drawer and pulled out a gun.

“Walker, he has a gun!”  Trivette yelled.

“Put the gun down!  Don’t make things any worse then they already are.”  Walker said.  “You aren’t going to take me to jail!"  The doctor put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

“NO!"  Walker yelled.  Walker shook his head and turned walking out the door.  The nurse tried to go in but Walker stopped her.

“I’m sorry but you can’t go in there.”

“Are you going to tell me what is going on?”

“Okay, just a minute.”

“Trivette, call the coroner, will you?”

“Sure, Walker.”

“Tell me how long you have worked for the doctor.”  Walker asked her.

“Not long, only two months. The other nurse left without notice so I took over."

“Okay, you know why I was seeing the doctor, right?”

“Yes sir.  You were tested positive for HIV.”

“Yes, that’s true, at least that’s what the doctor said.  I don’t have HIV, I never did.”

“I don’t understand, Ranger Walker.”

“He doctored the tests and gave me drugs to make me sick, that’s what I mean.”

“But why?”

“I have no idea.  We may never get the answer to that question.  He killed himself rather then go to jail.”

“I am so sorry, I had no idea.”

“It’s okay, it’s not your fault.  I’m just glad you’re not mixed up in this.  I need you to do me a favor.”

“If I can, what is it?”

“I want you to pull all the records of people he maybe treating for the same thing as me.  There may be other people he’s done this to.”

“I know for a fact that there are five or six others, for sure.”

“Good, can you pull their records?  I want to get them re-tested and examined by my doctor.”

“Okay, give me an hour to get them together.”

“I’ll be here.  I’m not going anywhere for a while.

It took her almost an hour to get the records together.

“Here you are, Ranger Walker.  I found five people being treated for the same thing.” “Good, now we need to contact these people and get them in here for another test.  But, don’t tell them why, only that we will explain later."

She called all the people and set up the appointments. Walker called his doctor and explained everything and he was glad to help. Finally, all five people were tested again.  All there was to do now was wait for the results.

“Ranger Walker, I sure hope he did the same to these people.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because if he did, that would mean they aren’t sick and that would be wonderful news for them.”

“Yeah, you’re right there. It would.”

The test results came back and the doctor called Walker right away.

“Walker, you won’t believe this but all five people had the same results as you did.  They aren’t sick either.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Okay, we need to call them all in together so we can talk to them.   I can’t wait to give them the good news."

Later that day they got everyone in the doctor’s office.  The five of them were sitting there talking and wondering what was going on.  Walker and the doctor came in.

“What is going here?"  One of them asked.

“My name is Texas Ranger Cordell Walker.  You all have something in common.  You were being treated for HIV, as was I.  Well, I am here to tell you that you are not HIV positive and you never were.”

“What do you mean, we never were?

“I don’t understand.”  One of them asked.

“The doctor was giving you drugs to make you sick, then treating you for something you never had.  The only thing wrong with you was the drugs he was giving you and once your system is clear of the drugs, you will be back to your old selves again.”  There was mixed emotions from everyone.  They didn’t know what to think or to say.

“Ranger Walker, who found out about what the doctor was doing?”

“I did, he made the mistake of messing with me and that wasn’t smart.  I am half Cherokee and when he told me I was HIV positive, I went to our spiritual leader for help.  You would have to know something about the Indian ways to fully understand, but I told him I was in trouble.  He said the spirits told him the doctor’s medicine was bad and the doctor’s words were false.  He told me to go to the doctor I trusted with my life and tell him what was going on.”

“That’s where I came in.  He came to me and told me and I ran some more tests.  I ran the same test on you and there is not one thing wrong with you, as Walker said."

“So Ranger Walker, we have you and White Eagle to thank.  Do you think it would be possible to meet White Eagle?  I for one would love to meet him.”

“Me, too.”  Another one said.  Everyone wanted to meet White Eagle.   Walker started to laugh.

“Okay, I’ll see what I can do.  I’m sure I can arrange something after you are out of the hospital and feeling better okay?”

“Okay, Ranger Walker.”

“The doctor will take it from here and tell you what we are going to do.”

“Okay folks, what we are going to.  I am going to put you all in the hospital to get the drugs out of your system.  It’s going to be a tough few days but after that you will feel like your old selves again.  There will be no charge to you for the hospital stay.”

“My name is Jenny, doctor.  I have two kids in school and I can’t afford a babysitter for that long.  My husband left me because he thinks I got HIV by cheating on him and now you say it was the doctor that did this.”

“Don’t worry about your kids.  If there is any one that needs a babysitter, I will make sure one is provided at no charge, one that you can trust.”  Walker told them.

“Thank you, Ranger Walker.”

“You’re welcome, Jenny.  I’ll be by the hospital to see how you are all doing.  I have to get going. Good luck to you all.”

Walker went to see if Alex was busy and tell her what happened.

“Walker, look at you.  You look wonderful, how do you feel?”

“I feel wonderful.  I gave five people their lives back again.  It doesn't get any better then that.”

“No, I guess it doesn't.”  Alex put her arms around Walker’s neck and he wrapped his arms around her waist.  Their lips met in a long kiss.

“Walker, I have a lot of work to do and this is not going to get it done.  Although it is a lot more fun.”

“Okay, I’m going.  Can you come out to the ranch tomorrow night for dinner?  I have something very special in mind.”

“Oh, you do?  What?”

“You will find out tomorrow night."

"What time, Walker?”

“7:00.  It’s Friday so I am going to have to tell Trivette that it’s our weekend.  Three’s a crowd.”

“You got that right, Cowboy.”

Walker kissed Alex good-bye and went to talk to Trivette.

”Walker, how did it go?”  Trivette asked as soon as Walker opened the door.

“It went real good, Trivette.  That’s one of the good things about our job.  Giving out good news for a change.”

“Yeah, I agree.”

“How about lunch, I’m starved.”

“Sounds good to me, Walker.”

“I’ll go see if Alex is free.  Oh by the way Trivette, Alex and I have plans for tomorrow night so I won’t be at C.D.’s.”

“Good Walker, you treat that lady real special.”

“Don’t you worry about that.”

It was finally Friday.  Alex couldn’t wait to see what Walker's surprise was.  She had on a red dress she just bought.  It was cut low in the front with no back and three inches above the knees.

This dress should knock his socks off.”  Alex said to her self, smiling.

Walker took another look around to see if he had everything ready.  He'd  moved the kitchen table to the front room in front of the fireplace.  The lights were turned off and the candles on the table and the glow from the fireplace lit up the room. He was wearing black Dockers and a black Henley shirt. He also had some of Alex's favorite cologne on.

“Alex will be pulling up any minute now.”  He thought to himself.

“She’s here.”  Walker turned the music on low.  Then waited at the door.  Alex knocked on the door and Walker opened it.

“Oh Alex, what a dress!  You look gorgeous!”

“You noticed.”  Alex said smiling.

“How can I not notice that dress?”

“What about you?  What an outfit, you look so sexy, Walker.”  Walker’s face turned red as a beet.  Alex walked in and saw what Walker had done to the front room.

“Look at this.  Walker, you have out done yourself."

“Thank you, I’m glad you like it.”

“What smells so good?”

“You’ll find out in a few minutes.”  Walker escorted Alex to the table and pulled out the chair for her to sit down.

“I’ll be right back.”  Walker went to the kitchen and came out with dinner.

“Oh Walker! Rack of lamb?  You made this?”

“Yes, I did.”

“It looks wonderful.”

“I hope it tastes wonderful.”

“Oh I’m sure it will.”

“Walker, that was a wonderful meal. Thank you.”

“Just wait until you see what’s for dessert.”  Walker said with a grin.

“Oh really?  I can’t wait.”

“Well you don’t have to.”

Walker picked Alex up in his arms and carried her up to the bedroom.  The lights were off but she could see a glow.  After pushing the door open Alex could see what the glow was coming from.  Walker had the room lit up with several candles.  The bed was covered with rose petals.  Alex’s mouth dropped open.  She was speechless.  This was one side of Walker she didn’t see too often, and never did he ever do anything like this.

“Walker!  I can’t believe my eyes.”

“Believe it, Alex.  I told you that I owed you one for the last time and I wanted this to be a night you will never forget.”

“I think you accomplished your mission because I will never forget this.”

Walker put Alex down gently on the bed of red roses and lay down beside her.  Walker took her in his arms and kissed her lips.

“Alex, this whole experience has made me realize how much you mean to me. The little things like a kiss good morning or when I say good-bye. I never thought I would feel so lost as when I thought I was unable to express my love for you in the way I wanted. The thought of not being able to make love to you was too much for me to handle.  You are a gift from God, Alex, someone who came into my life and made me whole again.  You filled that emptiness I had all my life. We take each other for granted sometimes without realizing it, but I promise I will never do that again.  I love you so much.”

“Walker, I am so happy that things have turned out.  I missed kissing you too and now we’re free to show our love for each other.”

Walker made love to Alex right there on the bed of roses he prepared for her.  That night when they made love, it was like nothing on earth.

“Alex, why are you crying?”  Walker asked.

“Oh, it’s nothing Walker, I’m just so happy.  What you did for me was so incredible and the things you said to me.   You are the strongest man I have ever known, and the most romantic as well.  That side of you took awhile to emerge and was quite a surprise and I thank God for bringing you into my life.”

Walker and Alex slept wrapped up in each other’s arms.

The next day, Walker went to check on the other 5 people in the hospital to see how they were doing.   They were doing fine and he assured them that he would take them to meet White Eagle when they felt up to it.  Trivette did some digging and found out where the nurse lived that used to work for Doctor Farley.  Walker and Trivette went to talk to her to see what they could find out.

“Excuse me Ma'm.  My name is Texas Ranger Cordell Walker and this is my partner, James Trivette.  We need to talk to you about a doctor you used to work for.”

“I knew this day would come."  She said.  “Come in.”

“Then you know why I’m here?”

“It has to do with Doctor Farley, doesn’t it?”

“Yes, I’m afraid it does.” Walker said.

“Come in, Ranger.”

“I’m sorry to have to bother you but we need you to tell us all you can about Doctor Farley.  About some of his patients he was treating.”

“What do you want to know?”  She asked.

“Were you aware of what he was doing to some of his patients?”

“I had my suspicions and when I confronted him with it, he got really nasty.  He told me to mind my own business.  He said if I told anyone, he would go after my family.  I really believed he would.  So I kept quiet.  I quit a few weeks later and moved out of town.  Before I left, he made it clear what would happen if I didn’t keep quiet.  He is crazy, Ranger Walker, you have to help me.”

“You won’t have to worry about him any more.  He’s dead.”

“He is?  How?”

“I was one of his patients and when I found out what he was doing, I went to arrest him.  But rather them go to jail, he killed himself.”

“You mean, I don’t have to be afraid any more?”

“That’s right.  What can you tell me about his patients?”

“I know there were 5 or 6 patients he was treating for HIV and there was nothing wrong with them.  There were also 2 cancer patients that I know of.  Before I left, I did a little snooping in his files.  But there is no telling how many people he’s done this to.”

“I want to thank you for your help.  And now you can relax.”

“It’s me that should be thanking you.”

“Well, good-bye and good luck to you.”

Walker and Trivette went back to the office.

“Trivette, we have to get this out on the news media.  Have all of his patients that were being treated for a life-threatening illness, seek help from another doctor. There’s no telling now many are out there.”

“You’re right, Walker.  He was one sick puppy."

The news of the doctor was put out and it turned up 10 patients in all-including Walker.  No one could understand why he did what he did.  Doctor Farley was a multi-millionaire.  He had everything going for him.  The only thing they knew was it made him feel in control.  He loved seeing the looks on the faces of the people he made believe were sick when they were really well.

A few days after Farley’s 5 patients got out of the hospital Walker took them to the reservation, as promised.  White Eagle was delighted to meet them.  They had never seen an Indian in his native dress.  They all had such a good time.  White Eagle told them some stories of long ago.  All eyes were trained on White Eagle.  After their visit was over, they thanked White Eagle for his time.

“We would not have missed this for the world.  Thank you so much for taking the time and thank you again for what you have done for us.”

“You are very welcome.  If you would like to came back again sometime, Washo will be glad to bring you.”

“That would be wonderful, sir.”

After several months of legal battles, all of Doctor Farley’s patients won their cases against his estate and were awarded one million dollars each.  Walker was the only one that didn’t put in a lawsuit against the doctor.  When Dr. Farley's family found out about it, they did some checking of their own to see what kind of man Walker was.  They were very impressed with what they found out so the donated five hundred thousand dollars to Walker’s Kick Drugs program in his name.

Walker found out where Jenny’s husband lived and went to see him.  He explained everything to him.  He said he still loved his wife and after finding out what happened, he felt really guilty for not believing her.  His marriage to Jenny was his second marriage.  His first marriage broke up when he found his wife cheating on him and he just assumed she was too.

“Ranger Walker, I don’t think I can ever face her again after what I did.”

“She still loves you and I think you can work this out.”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you still love her?”

“Yes, I never stopped loving her.”

Little did he know Jenny was standing right behind him listening to everything he had to say.

“Jenny, what are you doing here?”

Mike grabbed Jenny and held her tight.  Sensing everything was going to be all right between the two, Walker left quietly.
