THERE YOU ARE
by Michele Blackburn
Alex yawned and rolled over in bed. Walker lay sleeping peacefully on his side of the bed. He looked calm and relaxed. Better than Trivette said he looked the day before.
"He's really losing it, Alex. I've seen him take down ten drug dealers by himself calmer than he is now." Trivette told her over the phone.
"Just give him my love and tell him I'll see him at the altar."
"I'll tell him." Trivette hung up. What Trivette hadn't told her until after the ceremony was over was that Walker had been MIA for the thirty minutes before they were supposed to go to the church.
The clock read nine o'clock and a rooster crowed in the background. Alex was proud of the decision she had made about staying there for their honeymoon. It was kind of ingenious if she had to say so herself. After the reception, Trivette dropped them off at the airport. He watched them enter the airport and then he drove off in the RAM. Once they were sure Trivette was gone, they hailed a cab and headed back to the ranch for their honeymoon. It wasn't as grand as Hawaii, but it was the only way Alex knew that she could have Walker to herself for their first vacation without anyone who could possibly interrupt them knowing.
Alex padded downstairs to make coffee. She switched on the radio and laid on the couch. Walker came down an hour later to find Alex asleep. He sat down on the floor to watch her eyelids flutter. He was the happiest he had ever been. A song caught his ear from the kitchen and he went in there to drink his coffee and listen.
THERE YOU ARE IN THE EARLY LIGHT OF DAY
THERE YOU ARE IN THE QUIET WORDS I PRAY
I'VE BEEN BLESSED BY THE SIMPLE HAPPINESS
OF A PERFECT LOVE WE'VE MADE
Walker settled himself into a chair and laughed when he thought about the first time they had met. "Are you telling me that you arrested seven men on your own! That can't be, Ranger."
"Who arrested you?" Walker yelled out.
"You did." All seven men spoke at the same time.
EVERY TIME I TURN AROUND
WHEN I'M LOST AND WHEN I'M FOUND
LIKE AN ANGEL STANDING GUARD
THERE YOU ARE
"You know I've been thinking. You and me on the beaches of Tahiti."
"Promises, Promises." He mumbled when he awoke from his coma.
EVERY TIME I TAKE A BREATH
AND WHEN I FORGET TO BREATHE
YOU'RE WATCHING OVER ME
THERE YOU ARE
"Breathe, Alex. Come on, breathe." Alex's limp body lay on the ground of the container that held both she and Trivette for so many hours.
"She hung in as long as she could, Walker." Trivette told him as he laid to the side. Suddenly, water poured out of her mouth and she gasped for air. Walker hugged her to him. Thankful that she was alive.
WHEN I'M LOOKING FOR THE LIGHT
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
SEARCHING FOR THE BRIGHTEST STAR
THERE YOU ARE.
"I love you, Walker. Let me help you."
"I need to do this myself, Alex.." He walked back into the house. He remembers hearing Alex crying on the porch. He didn't want to hurt her, but he had to distance himself from her in case he never got his sight back.
THERE YOU ARE STANDING IN A CROWDED ROOM
THERE YOU ARE, THE EARTH AND I'M THE MOON
MY DESIRE IS TO STAND BY THE FIRE
THAT BURNS INSIDE OF YOU
He walked into her hospital room and saw her beaming face. "Alex, do you remember the wedding?"
"And do you remember there was something I wanted to ask you?"
"Yes." He took the ring out of his pocket.
"Alex, will you marry me?" At first he had no idea what she was going to say. She just stared at him with tears in her eyes and then she hugged him.
"Yes. . .Yes." He thought it was more of relief to him to get the words out that it was to hear her accept.
Alex's eyes fluttered open and she heard Martina McBride's voice finishing up a song called THERE YOU ARE. She got up and walked into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee only to see Walker sitting in a chair. He looked as if he was in deep thought.
"There you are." Alex said when she walked up to him.
"Yeah, here am I." He pulled her into his lap. "And here's where I'll always be." He kissed her.
