UNSUNG HERO

By Tammy

Sighing heavily Alex ran her fingers through her golden locks as she leaned back into her chair.  Papers were piled high on her desk and legal books were strewn everywhere reminding her of the case she was working on.  Tension mounted in her back and she could feel it moving upward where it finally settled in her temples.  The headache was tremendous and she longed for a hot bubble bath and a soft bed.  Knowing she could no longer function enough to concentrate the ADA started gathering odds and ends to take home.  Just as she clicked shut her briefcase the phone rang startling her.  Glancing at the time she figured it would be Walker.

“Hello…” She said trying to put a smile on the weary face. “Hi,” all it took was the sound of his voice and she beamed.  “Are you busy?”

“I was just getting ready to head home.”

          “Would you like some company?”

Alex sat there a second, part of her wanted to just go home and enjoy the peacefulness of her apartment, and yet Walker did give the best massages.  She also knew if she wanted to sit quietly and not talk about her day he would understand and would be content being with her. “Sure…that sounds nice. Why don’t you give me about an hour?”

          “Okay, I’ll see you then.”

Hanging up the phone Alex could already feel the tension disappearing.  He was so wonderful it was like he knew she needed him.  Who was she kidding, this was Walker, he always knew.

YOU SIT IN SILENCE IN THE SHADOWS

YOU DON’T COMPLAIN OR CRITICIZE

AND WHILE THE WORLD MAY SEE ME AS GOOD

THEY’RE NOT LOOKING THROUGH YOUR EYES

NO QUESTIONS ASKED

YOU’RE THERE WHEN I NEED YOU

WITH A LOVE THAT INSPIRES ME TO BE EVERYTHING

YOU DESERVE

Driving to her apartment Alex thought of how happy she was that Walker was coming over.  She was truly surprised that he was even going to join her.  All day he and Trivette had scoured the city looking for two men that had held up a local convenience store where they killed the attendant.  It was days like these that took a toll on Walker and very rarely did she see him until early the next morning, if then. She would embrace this evening and enjoy it for all it was.  Every moment she had with this man was special to her and she cherished them all.

Pulling up to her apartment she casually made her way to the door and walked in.  Setting her purse and keys on the table next to the door she walked to the stereo and turned on the radio.  A soft, slow country ballad came from the speakers as Alex made her way to the bedroom to change.

A few minutes later the doorbell rang and quickly spraying a bit of perfume Alex walked to the door.  Opening it she found Walker standing solemnly with a small bouquet of roses. His face was somber and she could tell right off that something had happened but what she wasn’t sure of and might never know.

CAUSE YOU’RE MY UNSUNG HERO

AND I KNOW IT’S NOT EASY TO WALK IN YOUR SHOES

DAY AFTER DAY

YOU CONTINUE TO AMAZE ME

NOW I SING THIS SONG OF LOVE FOR YOU

After placing the flowers in a vase the two went to the sofa and sat down.  Alex soon found herself in Walker’s embrace with her head on his shoulder.  She could feel the tension in his body as he took in each breath.  His arms held her as though nothing could break the bond.  It was in these first few moments Alex realized Walker had needed her, and she hoped she would find out why.

We have just been told of some late breaking news that happened today in downtown Dallas.  As usual our favorite Ranger, Cordell Walker has proven once again that he will save the day.  It seems he was working with his partner James Trivette on a case when a young child ran to him. It seems the child’s father was holding his younger brother, an infant under water.  Ranger Walker ran to the scene and taking charge the father was arrested and the children were placed in protective services.  Unfortunately the infant was unable to be saved.

Now onto other news…” the radio announcer began moving from topic to topic and Alex could tell that was what she had been waiting for.  Just as she got the courage up to confront Walker about the issue he moved and stood up.  From her position on the sofa she watched as he walked out on the patio and looked up at the stars.  Finally she too stood and walked out and stood next to him.

“Walker, what happened?” He looked down at her with eyes of pain and loss.

“I’m not a hero Alex, that baby died.  Her father was holding her under scalding water.  Her entire body was burned…I tried everything…she wouldn’t come back.  If only I had…” He cut off, deep down Walker knew there was nothing more he could have done.  But being the man he was any death was senseless even more so when it involved an infant.

WHILE OTHERS LONG TO STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT

YOU WORK YOUR MAGIC QUIETLY

CAUSE YOU’RE NOT IN IT FOR THE GLORY

THE LOVE YOU GIVE COMES NATURALLY

I MAY NOT HAVE MUCH

BUT WHAT I HAVE TO GIVE TO YOU

AND THIS SONG THAT I SING IS MY GIFT

AND I SWEAR THAT I MEAN EVER WORD

“Walker, don’t.  This death was senseless, an innocent child died.  But Walker you tried everything you could to save her.  Whether you like it or not the fact that you tried makes you a hero.  My Unsung Hero, you don’t need the glory to do what you do.  That is one of the things that makes you the man I fell in love with.  Everyone is special to you and deserves the chance to succeed and it hurts you when that chance is taken away.  You did saved the other children, focus on that.” Walking to him she wrapped her arms around his muscular frame and as he did the same they embraced in a warm hug.

“Thank you Alex.  At first I didn’t want to go anywhere but something told me I needed to be here tonight.  Now I know why.  I know it’s not easy for you every day with me out there putting myself In Harms’ Way.  You amaze me everyday and if there is a hero here right now Alex, it’s you.  Every time I think the worst is going to take control of me you are there to pick me back up and help me move forward.  Thank you.”

Tears swelled in Alex’s eyes she had never heard him talk like this.  She now knew what he felt when people called him a hero.  Being a hero wasn’t something she expected to be called and yet he had called her his hero.  All she did was attempt to be there when he needed her.  But thinking to herself she realized that is all a hero is supposed to be; someone who is there for another in a time of sorrow…a time of trouble.  So if loving another made her a hero then she would accept it.

Wiping the tears from her eyes Walker cupped her face in his hands.  He could tell from the expression on her face that she was shocked by the words he had uttered.  Not wanting to speak again he gently tipped his head forward and claimed her lips.
